RFA debrief[edit]

I am grateful to all the participants in my RfA. Even the oppose rationales that I disagree with have given me plenty to consider, and it's helpful to have a smudged-barometer reading on the viewpoints of a sizable minority of the community. My nominators and some thoughtful and generous emailers and Discord-DMers provided some much-needed support in a nerve-wracking time; I assume the best way to pay them back is to demonstrate that their faith in me was deserved. If there's something else I can do, I hope they'll let me know.

Involved

By far the most interesting and prolific concern raised about my candidacy is my understanding of INVOLVED. I hope those holding that concern will be comforted to know how seriously I take it. I hope also to see some further community conversation, and I have some early thoughts on that which I'll share below. I want to make it clear that there are some among my opposers on these grounds—one example being RoySmith—who could tell me that I've crossed the line and I'd strongly consider a voluntary desysop.

The main discussion I'm aware of that focused on whether INVOLVED should be evaluated at the whole contentious topic (CT) level is this 2021 unblock request. There was some reasoned pushback against the idea that the blocking admin was involved in the entire "gender-related disputes" CT area, and the unblock appeal was declined. After that discussion, I started a village pump thread to discuss the issue, but it didn't attract much attention.

My best read on the status quo is that most current administrators do not appear to hold such a broad understanding of the policy, meaning that if involvement is to be construed this way, it would be preferable to have it become explicit in policy. I would be likely to oppose such a change, but I haven't yet seen the strong arguments for it that are sure to develop.

Civility

A quick note on the other major reason for opposition, or caution in the level of support: civility. I think Lourdes' points about the need for a cultural shift in tolerance of civility are well-made. You're likely to see me push back against incivility more often.

Toxicity

RFA is frequently described as a toxic place. I feel very fortunate not to have felt that during my run. It was still a tense time for me and my family, all of whom expressed as much relief (often bundled with profanity) as congratulations when it was over. I counsel all who are considering RFA to pick a light week (as I did) and to avoid falling ill during that week (as I did, mildly). Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 03:20, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I counsel all who are considering RFA to pick a light week (as I did) and to avoid falling ill during that week (as I did, mildly). Imagine that, me taking a week-long vacation from work solely to go run an RFA. That seems less like a vacation and more like some other type of ordeal-prompted compulsory absence. I enjoyed reading your debriefing. Best of luck with your new responsibilities! Cheers, WaltClipper -(talk) 13:25, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks WaltClipper! (I resisted the urge to call you "WC") Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 13:30, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I was taken aback by how quickly the RfA went from "Huh, FFF has a different understanding of INVOLVED than some of us," to concerns that you were going to go rogue the minute the admin buttons were installed. Joyous! Noise! 14:11, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

question from ZomRobWiki[edit]

im a new user from MicroWiki and im not sure if the rules are the same so i want to ask a question; are we freely allowed to make pages like Daeng Koro [id]? because i want to make an english version of Daeng Koro's page. ZomRobWiki (talk) 00:36, 6 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi ZomRobWiki, and welcome to English Wikipedia! I am not knowledgeable about the rules of MicroWiki, but I would assume that they differ from the policies here. You are technically not allowed to create new pages in article-space quite yet. Once you're autoconfirmed, which will happen when you've made 10 total edits, you'll be able to do so. If you'd like to get started on a Koro article sooner than that, you can start it in draftspace at Draft:Daeng Koro. We have notability policies governing what should be a standalone article, and the most applicable one for Koro would probably be WP:NBIO. At a glance, I think it's likely he'll qualify. If you're translating from the Indonesian page, I recommend reading Help:Translation, especially the parts about crediting the source article. Let me know if you have any follow-up questions. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 01:14, 6 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Belated congratulations![edit]

I just look at the requests for adminship page to see who was up, and I saw you! I just want to congratulate you. I only interacted with you briefly during Joan of Arc FAR processes and with some issues supporting helping out SandyGeorgia, but I felt you were particularly thoughtful and kind-hearted in your editing role. I think Wikipedia is very lucky to have you. (And ironically, I hope my interactions with you as an admin are minimal!) Wtfiv (talk) 05:58, 6 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Wtfiv. It makes me happy to hear from you, and the kind words are appreciated. That Joan FAR was amazing, and I'm pleased to have played a minor role. Your work was great, and that FA star looks extra shiny. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 13:20, 6 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Persistent Disruptive editing[edit]

Hi @Firefangledfeathers

This is to specifically bring to your notice the disruptive editing on article Simon Ekpa. While editors can contribute constructively, this editor here Moved the Namespace to irrelevant Namespace. Link

This is a concern that requires urgent attention as it's malicious. Secondly, check out the article page, Indigenous People of Biafra and see it's being vandalized by the same user. I am writing you in Particular because l know you are an Administrator who can take adequate action(s)

Thanks

1st Contributor (talk) 14:03, 7 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi 1st Contributor. It looks like other admins have already stepped in to block that user and protect the page from future disruptive moves. I'm not sure there's anything more for me to do. It looks like there's some real-life controversy and some resultant on-wiki disruption and disputes. I highly recommend using talk pages and reaching out for more input at places like WP:NPOVN or WP:BLPN rather than reaching out to multiple users simultaneously. Question from ShesGucci (00:51, 12 August 2023)[edit]

Are templates like disambiguations editable? --ShesGucci (talk) 00:51, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi ShesGucci. You may be asking about editing the templates themselves: many are editable (though it can take some technical skill or experience) and some require other user rights to change. When you see a template used in an article, it can usually be tweaked, added, or removed by any editor. This includes many of the disambiguation/navigation templates like Template:About or Template:Redirect. Can you tell me more about what you're hoping to do? Regarding IShowSpeed Edit[edit]

I believe the confusions may have stemmed from an edit conflict. There was one spelling correction I made (of -> off) and I also made changes to a run-on sentence and the general tone of the article to better match the encyclopedic nature of Wikipedia. I understand that the situation is recent, and I would be happy to accept your revert until such a consensus is reached.

Question from Padmeone (15:31, 21 August 2023)[edit]

Hello, I am working on publishing a professional page for a Doctor in Aspen Colorado. I finished the sandbox outline and working on citations. Would there be a way to look at this page and give some advice and guidance to finishing out the publication and having the page go live? --Padmeone (talk) 15:31, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Padmeone. I gave it a skim. Give me another half-day or so to look into it a bit more and give you some feedback. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 17:07, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Padmeone (talk) 18:21, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, Padmeone. I have some thoughts:

  • Your first hurdle is showing that Fraser is notable, the bar for whether or not a subject needs a Wikipedia article. Notability for people generally comes down to the criteria at WP:BASIC. You'll want to pull together reliable sources that are independent of Fraser that devote significant amount of coverage to him.
  • It's possible you have a conflict of interest when it comes to Fraser. If this is so, or possibly so, I encourage you to read WP:COI and ask questions if there are parts that are unclear to you.
  • If you can show that Fraser is notable and you don't have a COI, or if you appropriately handle your COI, you'll need to rewrite parts of the article to comply with WP:NOTCV. There's some promotional language that needs to be rewritten, and it'll be important that you frame the article around the coverage in those reliable, independent sources and not on Fraser's CV or sites associated with him.

I know that's a lot, and there's more I didn't bring up since those are the major barriers to publishing the article. Please let me know if you have any followup questions. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 02:00, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the suggestions and recommendations. I will work through the bullet points you outlined and reach back out for more help after resolving the current conflicts with the page. Padmeone (talk) 16:49, 23 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Leo Frank Short Description[edit]

I understand your desire to avoid a back-and-forth on the talk page of the article, but what is the objective basis for proclaiming that Leo Frank was wrongly convicted when no court has ever overturned the ruling? How is it not simply a matter of opinion? Livius Plinius (talk) 20:08, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I think you feel like you have a really unassailable point. If so, the input of other editors who recognize its obvious correctness will surely drown out my opposition. Let's leave some time for that to happen. I think further content discussion here is pointless, where so few involved editors can participate. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 20:11, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I am merely asking you to elaborate your stance. In what sense do you think it is an objective statement or “fact” that Leo Frank was wrongly convicted? Livius Plinius (talk) 20:24, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm pretty sure I understand what you're asking. Please don't feel like you need to restate your request in different ways. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 20:32, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

24 vs 48[edit]

You wrote there that you pblocked TA for 24 hours, however the block log says that you actually pblocked them for 48 hours. Not a big deal but for the sake of correctness it should be clarified that the pblock's duration is 48 hours. Ktrimi991 (talk) 21:16, 24 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Block[edit]

I did a mistake at Pashalik of Yanina and im not going to ask for an unblock (although you asked me to self-revert and then decided not to wait for my response). After youve defended their version many times with page protections and the "new rule", why didnt you block them as well for reverting [3]? They have made more reverts than I have. Is it wrong to revert only when the version you have been protecting for a month is being removed? Tsepelovitis Alvanitis (talk) 00:38, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi TA. Thanks for acknowledging the mistake. I am strongly considering an unblock, and I'll post a few questions for you at your user talk page. The answer to your question about sanctioning the other user is now at the article talk page. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 00:44, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you but what is the point of an unblock? I got a mark in my block log which can't be hidden with an unblock, and the other editor who reverted, did not get the same "mark". Youre asking me not to revert there anymore, why dont you ask them as well not to revert anymore? Because they are supporting the version which you protected? Tsepelovitis Alvanitis (talk) 01:41, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again TA. I certainly won't force an unblock on you. My reasoning for not blocking the other editor is still at the article talk page. I would prefer that no editors revert there anymore, and I'm happy to tell anyone who asks. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 01:45, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If you dont want more reverts there as you claim: if I revert there again and the other party reverts me again. Will you block us both or will you block me only again? I dont want to be unkind, but do you have any off- wiki connection with the other party? Tsepelovitis Alvanitis (talk) 02:08, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't feel you're being unkind, and thanks for the polite inquiry. No, I don't have any off-wiki connection to any of the editors involved in this dispute. If you revert again after your partial block expires, yes I will block you again. Do you anticipate doing so, or is this just hypothetical? Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 02:11, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Archivistwannabe (16:10, 25 August 2023)[edit]

Hello! I just wrote an article in my sandbox. It's not 100% but it's nearing completion. At what point will I be allowed to write and publish articles for the general public to see? Is there an approval process? Please let me know! -Archivistwannabe --Archivistwannabe (talk) 16:10, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there Archivistwannabe, and welcome to Wikipedia. Once you reach autoconfirmed status, you'll be able to directly publish articles. This happens after (A) your account has been registered for at least four days and (B) you've made at least 10 edits. Looks you have a bit more editing to do and three more days to wait. You can also move your sandbox into draft-space, where other editors can review it and decide if it should be published. You can learn more about this at Wikipedia:Articles for Creation. I glanced at your sandbox article, and I'd urge you not to publish it, even when you're technically capable of doing so. We very much value having info in Wikipedia by supported by citations to reliable sources, and your article is so far uncited. It's hard to write a whole article while also learning the ropes around here. Help:Your first article has some good info about this. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 16:30, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. I find the learning process easier when I have content to "shape" and improve, rather than merely learning tools out of context. Also, perhaps a friendlier way to put your request of urging me not to publish might be to recommend building a list of citations first, which was my plan all along. All I did was inquire about the process, so you glancing at my sandbox seems a bit premature. Again, thanks for the quick response. 2600:1001:B025:D6D3:D69:B797:3E73:84F4 (talk) 16:36, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
A friendly urge! Happy to hear you're working on the citations. You can see more about how to format them at WP:CITATIONS. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 16:50, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Help request with dealing with incivility[edit]

I would like to request help in dealing with a user acting incivily. About a month ago I added a topic on the Lesbian talk page talking about a possible change to the definition from "homosexual woman" to "woman with same sex attraction" for various reason among which was the fact that aromantic and asexual people also use the term to refer to themselves too. The conversation initially started off fine but as it prgressed I started to get some bad feeling ending in the fact that I was out of the blue accused of "erasing homosexuality" and being a "revisionist" despite tha fact that I'm also lesbian and not rewriting history or facts to suit my agenda.

I'm seeking action only right now since I was hoping that other people would comment on the topic but seeing as how a month has passed with no conversation I know that it's going to be ignored. I considered going to the content dispute page and might later for the suggested change to be actually considered, but right now I simply want to deal with user's behaviour so that they don't do it in the future. Hope to hear back from you soon. EldritchEmpress (talk) 14:46, 26 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi EldritchEmpress. I have Lesbian on my watchlist, so I'm vaguely familiar with that discussion, though I haven't read it all the way through. I don't think there's anything I can do with my admin hat on. I encourage you to follow the steps of WP:CONDUCTDISPUTE, which starts with a polite comment at the other user's talk page. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 15:49, 26 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I understand that I probably should, but I just don't feel comfortable doing that considering they were willing to bring out such accusations purely out of disagreement on a single idea when I wasn't even being hostile or annoying to them. EldritchEmpress (talk) 16:10, 26 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
EldritchEmpress, I can empathize with not wanting to engage further. If you think you might be up for it after waiting a little while, I do think it would be worth it to start with some user talk page outreach. I have seen editors skip that step and go right to WP:ANI and WP:AE, but I wouldn't recommend it. Other than listen and commiserate, there's nothing I can do here, but I'm happy to do those two. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 00:43, 27 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Alright thank you, I'll try in maybe like 2-3 days EldritchEmpress (talk) 07:44, 27 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

second question from zomrobwiki[edit]

sorry to disturb, but whenever im just making the translation for daeng koro, it keeps showing that around 85-95% of the text is translated from machine, even if i rarely used it on the article. im pretty confused by this, so can you explain this to me? thanks a bunch. regards, Zombie Robby the Wikiman (talk) 13:30, 27 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again @Zombie Robby the Wikiman. I'm not sure why that would be happening. Because you don't have the content you're translating on a wiki page, I can't see what's going on. If it's just content copied from another language's WIkipedia (and not from some other copyrighted source) and then at least partially translated, you could paste it into a subpage like User:ZomRobWiki/Koro as long as you include an edit summary that says something like "this edit includes content copied from [link to the exact article]". Question from Khunou S on Wikipedia:Contact us (22:15, 29 August 2023)[edit]

Hi! I have a question on page translation. With thatal being said, i wanted to translate English articles to my local language i.e. Khiamniungan Naga (kix) but unfortunately I cannot. I am not sure how to add languages as well. Therefore, in this regard would you like to help me out so that i can translate. Thanking you in anticipation. --Khunou S (talk) 22:15, 29 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Khunou S. This is not something I have experience with, but I still hope I can be helpful. There's a guideline for you at Wikipedia:Translate us. Am I right in thinking that there is not currently a Wikipedia in the Khiamniungan language? Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 00:35, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. You are right Sir. Would you help me create because i am not in a position to do it. You are definitely empowered to do this. I really want to translate important English articles to my language.
Please consider my request. Thankyou Khunou S (talk) 00:44, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again Khunou S. As far as I'm aware, the place to discuss starting a new Wikipedia project is at m:Requests for new languages. Any new proposal needs to comply with the m:Language proposal policy. I do not have any more power over this than you do, since it's not something that English Wikipedia admins have any control over. Please let me know if you have any follow-up questions, and I'll do my best to at least point you in the right direction. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 00:48, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protection at Ó Fearghail[edit]

Hi, Firefangledfeathers. You said at the RFPP for Ó Fearghail yesterday that you were protecting Ó Fearghail for 1 week from then, but the log says it's only protected until tomorrow (i.e. two days). Is it too late to fix that? The IP has already made an edit request on the talk page to add the disputed content (ignoring the discussion right above it). If they find that semi-protection has expired, they'll start right back on their disruptive edits. Scolaire (talk) 17:44, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Ingridach (09:39, 2 September 2023)[edit]

Hello, hope you're well. I'm trying to make a biography page for a musician, and my page keeps being rejected for lack of notability or reliable sources. I have 10 references from different interviews, magazines, charts etc. How many does it take? I also have to mention that the musician has appeared numerous times in printed media in the 90s and I don't know how to prove that - should I attach pictures of the newspapers? Let me know if you have any tips for this, thank you in advance! --Ingridach (talk) 09:39, 2 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ingridach. What you're looking for are at least three high-quality sources. You need them to be
  • independent of Jones himself,
  • reliable,
  • and focused on Jones specifically, for at least a paragraph or two.
It's ok for sources to be offline (like newspapers). You need to provide enough bibliographic detail that someone else can find the source. It's nice if you provide quotes and it's possible other users might ask you to email a picture. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 00:38, 3 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Bmishra2 (17:16, 2 September 2023)[edit]

Hey!! I am looking to create a new page on my company, it's a startup, just to provide more information about it to the people. I am wondering how do we create a new page? --Bmishra2 (talk) 17:17, 2 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bmishra2. It can be very hard to successfully navigate learning to edit Wikipedia while also trying to create an article about something with which you have a conflict of interest. I posted a welcome message at your talk page that includes some links to relevant policies and guidelines. The first thing you'll run into is that we strongly discourage directly creating an article about a company you're involved with. You can start it in your sandbox or in draft space, and eventually an uninvolved editor can decide if it's ready for publication or not. I encourage you to try your hand at editing some articles where you don't have a conflict of interest; you're likely to learn some skills and norms that will be helpful down the line. Protection of Marlon Brando[edit]

No one appreciates your zeal in logging protections under CTOPS as much as I do (probably), but I do think it might interest you to know that Brando died over ten years ago, so not even BRDP, much less BLP, applies to him anymore. You might want to rethink that one (although that does not affect the protection).

I guess we could say he was larger than life . Daniel Case (talk) 02:56, 7 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Well gosh that's the most terrible news. Are you sure? Fixing now. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 03:00, 7 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hey User:Firefangledfeathers is the protection supposed to be 99 years or indefinite? You said indefinite in the description area but set it for 99 years. If you meant for it to be indefinite, can you please change it? Thanks. Visualian (talk) 11:48, 7 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The difference between 99 years and indefinite is going to be someone else's problem. I'll be long dead by then, and anyone wanting unprotection can submit a request without consulting me first. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 12:13, 7 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Advt123 on Austria-Hungary (23:44, 10 September 2023)[edit]

Hello there, i was just wondering if it was possible to retrieve my old edit of the austria hungary page. I accidentally exited the tab and was wondering if i could get my work back --Advt123 (talk) 23:44, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Advt123. I'm sorry this is happening to you. If you're editing on a computer, there's a chance that your browsers "Recently closed tabs" option will remember the work you did. Ctrl+Shift+T or Cmd+Shift+T usually work, though you may have to hit it a few times if you've since closed other tabs. If that doesn't work, I'm not sure there are any other options. Wikipedia itself doesn't store unpublished article edits, so we're hoping your browser did. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 00:44, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from TriosLosDios on Carpenter Gothic (05:56, 14 September 2023)[edit]

Hello I have a question about editing a wikipedia article (gallery) ... In neither visual or source editor I am unable to see an option for media to add photo image. Maybe you can explain or help with this progress here. Thanks --TriosLosDios (talk) 05:57, 14 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi TriosLosDios. First, you need the image to be uploaded to either Wikipedia or Commons (instructions here). In source editor, at Carpenter Gothic or any other article, find the <gallery> and </gallery> tags. Between the tags, you want to paste the file name of your uploaded image, something like "File:Example.jpg", optionally followed by a pipe character and a caption, like "File:Example.jpg|An example image". Help:Gallery tag has more info on more complex uses. Let me know if you have any questions! Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 11:10, 14 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! TriosLosDios (talk) 00:40, 15 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Firefangledfeathers. The instructions that you provided for editing Wikipedia article (gallery) was helpful. After, the content was added to article/gallery the link associated with content is red. Also, the red link reads that there's no page related to the content. My question is what content is required on a factual basis pertaining to creating a page ? Any suggestions will be appreciated. TriosLosDios (talk) 01:25, 15 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again, TriosLosDios. Thank you for adding that image. The redlink is to Saint Mary's Episcopal Church (Milton, Florida), and redlinks are not a bad thing. See WP:REDLINK for info on when and why we might keep them around. It would be better to have an article about that church, presuming it's "notable". Notability is an important concept here, where we decide whether or not a given subject deserves a dedicated article. The church might be notable if it passes either the "general notability guideline" or a specific guideline about buildings. If you're interested in creating the article, a good way to start is to look for strong sources that say quite a bit about the church and evaluate them against those guidelines. See also WP:FIRST for info on creating your first article. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 01:39, 15 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Citation needed? Help needed![edit]

Hey! Thanks for your attention to the parental rights movement article. I'm pinging you because of your citation needed tag. I want to make your suggested changes: my goal is to continuously improve this article because the name is obviously being used more and more, and causing confusion, but I'll admit I'm a green editor here on Wikipedia. Would you mind clarifying what part of the lead you found confusing and (if you don't mind) suggesting how you would go about adding or writing that section of the article, or pointing to what needs expanding? I'm trying to follow the style for other articles that revolve around the far right and LGBTQ+ issues more broadly, but I've run into some limitations. Thanks! MicrobiologyMarcus (talk) 15:44, 14 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MicrobiologyMarcus. I have a busy stretch of time ahead, so I may not be able to get back to you until 8-10 hours from now. I'll poke at it sooner if possible. I think the article really deserves to exist and I'm glad you made it. I do think you need to review the sources you collected and find which ones support that the movement is "far right". There should be a line in the body that uses that descriptor and cites those sources. If that can't be done, we should remove that part of the lead. I'm breaking my rule on really trying to keep these sorts of discussions at article talk pages, so please respond there if you think there's more to say. Question from The Joyful Sound on Saint Titus (22:39, 15 September 2023)[edit]

Greetings. The Wikipedia article reads, "Titus from Ephesus to Corinth, with full commission to remedy the fallout precipitated by Timothy's delivery of 1 Corinthians" and references 1 Cor 16:10, 11. However, 1 Cor 16:10 says, "Now, if Timotheus come...," clearly suggesting, contrary to the article, that Timothy had not yet come and could not have delivered this epistle especially in light of 1 Cor 4:17 and that this being addressed to those already in Corinth. Advise. --The Joyful Sound (talk) 22:39, 15 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi The Joyful Sound. I can't quite wrap my head around the particulars here. I highly recommend posting at Talk:Saint Titus. If no one responds after a while, it might help to ask for input from related Wikiprojects, like WP:WikiProject Christianity or WP:WikiProject Bible. An unambiguous improvement would be to find non-biblical sources that comment on Titus' actions and movements. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 00:46, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Ingridach (14:32, 20 September 2023)[edit]

Hello, hope you are well. I have another question - I've been trying to upload at least one picture of my page's subject. However, they keep getting deleted for various reasons. For example, I had a picture of the subject from a very close contact to him and it was agreed to release this image on wikipedia under a free license. But the image got deleted by wikipedia because there were doubts about its origins. Another image was one I took, and was again deleted due to doubts & its small size. I am a bit hopeless seeing that I am not allowed to share even my own images. Do you have any tips for this? Perhaps it is something I am doing wrong? --Ingridach (talk) 14:32, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again Ingridach. The uploading you've been doing has been at Commons, a related but separate project. I am not so experienced a Commons user. I can tell that your images are much more likely to stay if you can get the rights owner to confirm the release via the Commons:VRT process. You can ask for more help over there at the Commons:Help desk. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 17:44, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This means you are free to create User:SolTellsAll/Sandbox, User:SolTellsAll/Sandbox2, User:SolTellsAll/Sandbox3, etc. You can also name them by topic, like User:SolTellsAll/DraftAboutSomething. See Wikipedia:User pages for the policy on what is permissible in your userspace. New pages patrol newsletter[edit]

Hello Firefangledfeathers,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

Clarification on evidence threshold for CheckUser[edit]

What evidence would I have to present to prompt a CheckUser investigation of a user that I believe may be connected to "Vizorblaze", "Lois Lane", and the IPs? Philomathes2357 (talk) 02:20, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Philomathes2357. I don't have any special admin knowledge on this, so I'm mainly speaking as someone who's filed SPI requests, including CU requests. I'd look for evidence based on shared focus areas, time of edits, any verbal "tells", shared edit summary patterns, etc. There's not much advice out there, but Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/SPI/Guide to filing cases might help a bit. Wide reaching implications[edit]

Hi, it's me again(and no I didn't have the courage what I promissed to do last time). Today I have a different concern though involving three different pages. I made an edit on the page for Japan linking to unitary in the infobox section, however it was reverted and similar edits had been before too. When I asked why I was pointed towards a page about link etiquette which I felt like was a misapplication since it was in refrence to sentences and not infoboxes along with the fact that the template documentation specifically asked to link every label. In response the other editor changed the documentation and said that all the country pages that do it, which afaik is all of them except Japan, are wrong. idk if that was the correct thing to do though considering the fact that they didn't ask anyone else before making the edit.

So what should be done? I feel like there should be some kind of talk between the template and country page editors to decide before such a decicion is made, though idk how to make that happen. EldritchEmpress (talk) 00:08, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again EldritchEmpress! As a disclaimer, I have a bias here because I think Nikkimaria is amazing. It's not the I would never disagree with her, it's just that I'd want to cross my i's, dot my t's, look both ways, pray to a god or two, etc. Part of the background also is that Japan is a featured article, which has at least two consequences. One, it must follow the style guidelines, including MOS:SOB, per the FA criteria. Two, it's reasonable for editors to steward any ongoing changes per WP:FAOWN. That said, it probably won't hurt to talk it out more at a talk page—either the one you're at or the infobox template talk page. Infobox template documentation frequently has very little consensus backing it. The guidance you referred to was added back in 2012, so it has a not insignificant amount of implicit consensus behind it. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 01:11, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Cheers :-) I did check and AFAICT it wasn't discussed at the template's talk page before being added, so it's more likely a case of nobody reads the documentation. Nikkimaria (talk) 01:18, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well, hello! Doesn't surprise me much. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 01:22, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think it should probably be had on the template page as otherwise it would be cloggin up the talk page of Japan with a mostly unrelated conversation. If they don't mind I'd want to also ask @Nikkimaria to join that conversation since they started it. EldritchEmpress (talk) 06:41, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The Information quote[edit]

The Talk:Molly White (writer) section is gone now but in case you still wanted the quote:

... she said over a Zoom call from her home outside Boston. ... Editing such entries felt important to White, not just because of her leftist politics (she describes herself as skewing socialist), but because of her firm belief that “one of the ways to make society change is through the spread of information,” she said.

Hello! I would like to reinstate a Wikipedia bio page that was removed without permission by an unidentified person several years ago. Is there anything special I need to do since there was a page published prior? --FlameproofLAB (talk) 04:36, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi FlameproofLAB. I can look into it. What was the bio page called? Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 13:03, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This was 10 years ago. It was Adriana Sanford - a bio page. FlameproofLAB (talk) 21:39, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, FlameproofLAB. It looks like it was deleted back in 2011 for being a copyright violation, and another version was deleted in 2016 after this "Articles for deletion" discussion. There's no rule against recreating the article, but it would be wise to read the 2016 discussion and try to preempt those concerns. You will not technically be able to create new articles until you are "autoconfirmed", but you can get a headstart by beginning the work at Draft:Adriana Sanford. Question from Aid1969 (16:25, 14 October 2023)[edit]

Hi, you seem to be my mentor!

If you've got the time...

Topic: Foreign language citations.

Short: WP:RSUEC

Long -hopefully not TLDR🙂: As I'm new to Wikpedia I've come to ask you this after reading that the top of your wiki wishlist coincides somewhat with mine! I had been editing Lake Chad as an IP and found that a user user:newbamboo had seen fit to delete a third of that article with very little tolerance for opposition. I have no problem with the new edits per se, but that user had also rewitten parts of the article including a number of Chinese citations which link to external Chinese sites written wholly in Chinese. My question, after noticing a similar trend on many other articles in recent years is:

Politely: Do you know of any discussions in the Wikipedia community that consider whether WP:RSUEC needs updating to reflect more recent times and ever changing values?

Crudely: Is anything being done about the Chinese state slowly rewriting English Wikipedia?

Thanks, congrats with your new admin status and apologies for my probably nebulous question; I am being serious though.Aid1969 (talk) 16:25, 14 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Aid1969. I see you've already started up some discussion at a couple user talk pages. The best move really is to start a discussion at Talk:Lake Chad and ping the relevant editors. As far as I'm aware, there haven't been any major moves recently to rework RSUEC. It does say that we prefer English-language sources, so it would be against the guideline to remove English sources and replace them with non-English ones. It also suggests requesting translated quotations when the non-English sources are used.
I'm also not aware of any evidence of concerted effort by the Chinese government to rewrite Wikipedia (it wouldn't surprise me to learn such an effort exists). If you do have any such evidence, I would definitely recommend bringing it up for administrator attention. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 16:55, 14 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Activist tells me "Editors operating in good faith, not seeking to promote specific views, will usually try to find some way to cooperate, collaborate, and compromise with almost all other editors" and I don't get the impression that's happening on that page, unlike some others in the topic area. It seems to me some editors have decided Wikipedia has a firm position on this topic and it's the only acceptable one. It's awkward, because many liberal progressive folk, which includes me, would agree, to varying degree, with that position. But I don't think that's Wikipedia. Maybe I'm wrong. I'm not sure where to take this or what to do to fix it. -- Colin°Talk 10:17, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Colin. I'll definitely take a look sometime in the next 24 hours or so. I understand that you're coming at this from a place of wanting to see more neutral, RS-based coverage. I'd have assumed so, knowing your body of work in other areas.
I think of you as being a spectacular editor and contributor, but your willingness to post at such length does put up barriers to participation. You're not the only one at that and closely related pages, which can make things worse. Editors who are also eager to spend a few hundred words when a few dozen might do see a lengthy comment and respond in kind.
I get that there's often no shortcut, and I would absolutely rather have you continue with no behavior change than disengage entirely. Some of your comments are long because they are summarizing a new set of high-quality sources you've just turned up; no complaints there, obviously. An example of a place I think you could have done better is a comment like the one at 12:47, 20 October 2023, where you finished with some analysis of Rowling's work.
This is all unasked for advice, and I reiterate that I'm grateful to have you around. You won't hurt my feelings if you ignore or push back on this advice. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 13:58, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's not really unasked for. I was certainly looking for advice if I'm going wrong on those pages. You certainly aren't the first to spot I write too much and can get carried away about unnecessary stuff. -- Colin°Talk 14:14, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Mann Dhokai on Raichur Doab (12:26, 24 October 2023)[edit]

What is coored missing? --Mann Dhokai (talk) 12:26, 24 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mann Dhokai, and welcome to Wikipedia! Some articles on geographic locations have coordinates to say where on Earth they are. Those appear to not be a part of the Raichur Doab article, so it's been placed in some hidden tracking categories. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 12:57, 24 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, you kindly removed copyvio content on Volvexzshawa, identified by another editor. The article's Talk page has some of the same text. Does this need to come off too? If so, I will remove and request revdel. Many thanks. Tacyarg (talk) 17:08, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tacyarg. Yes, please remove and tag any copyvio on the talk page. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 17:31, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from CoolClover (23:01, 25 October 2023)[edit]

Can you look over my edit of the January 16th Wikipedia if that's okay with you? It is my first edit ever! --CoolClover (talk) 23:01, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Happy first edit day, CoolClover! That was a solid edit. There's room for improvement on the quality of the cited source. WP:Reliable sources is the policy that talks about what we look for when evaluating the reliability of a source, and WP:Reliable sources/Perennial houses the results of some past discussions about sources. The parent company of ThoughtCo has a listing there which suggests editors think it's marginally reliable. Do you think you might be able to track down a higher quality source? Question from Metroidplane26 (03:28, 28 October 2023)[edit]

Can you make a seperate userpage for userboxes? --Metroidplane26 (talk) 03:28, 28 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It's possible and I see you already have done it! Thehotwheelsguy99 (talk) 04:16, 28 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly what THWG99 said! The only thing I'd add, Metroidplane26, is that many users transclude their userbox subpage onto their main userpage. You can do so by adding {{User:Metroidplane26/Userboxes}} right where you currently have the link. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 04:30, 29 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

An apology[edit]

Hello Firefangledfeathers. I would just like to apologize for a response to you back in August when you fairly (and politely) noted I shouldn't be pinging people in discussions. I was too dismissive and defensive. I am trying to improve going forward. Zenomonoz (talk) 11:48, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Zenomonoz. I'm a bit swamped IRL right now and I can't recall the specifics, but I'm happy to accept your apology! Time and poor memory can do much healing. Glad your on a mission of self-improvement. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 13:21, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

My first article User:MWinter4/YΔ- and ΔY-transformations (graph theory) is ready to be moved to mainspace (with the name "YΔ- and ΔY-transformations"). It seems I cannot just move it myself (no permission?). I sent it for review, but this might take quite a while (4 months!?). Is waiting the only way to bring it to mainspace? Will I be able to move articles to mainspace myself at some point? --MWinter4 (talk) 18:55, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like your article was accepted. Congratulations, MWinter4, and thanks for the interesting article. You already have the user right needed to move most pages, and you can see the instructions at Help:How to move a page. Let me know if you have any followup questions. Question from MWinter4 on YΔ- and ΔY-transformations (11:44, 31 October 2023)[edit]

I tried to move YΔ- and ΔY-transformations to YΔ- and ΔY-transformation to comply with the singular rule for titles. I believe I should have the permission to perform the move, but I do not. The error message reads "The page "YΔ- and ΔY-transformations" cannot be moved to "YΔ- and ΔY-transformation" because the title "YΔ- and ΔY-transformation" matches an entry". The target page currently exists as a redirect to the source page. This is not my first attempt to move something, and I have always received this message, no matter whether the target page actually existed. --MWinter4 (talk) 11:44, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

MWinter4, my best guess is that the delta character is on some blacklist. I went ahead and performed the move. If you run into a similar issue again with uncontroversial moves, you can ask me for help or post it at WP:RM#T. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 14:54, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi EleTorres. I see you've already successfully made a few edits to Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark, back on November 6. Did you attempt to make some edits today? Hi IP 2600. Most of Wikipedia is wide open for unregistered editors. Even the articles that are protected most commonly have associated talk pages where you can suggest improvements. I assume this is about COVID-19 lab leak theory, my most recent protection action. That wasn't even really a weighty choice on my part: I was just restoring the previous indefinite protection placed by another admin, which lapsed for bothersome technical reasons. Falun Gong Dispute[edit]

Thank you for advising DRN that there is discussion at FTN. As I think you know, DRN does not handle a dispute that is also pending in another content forum or in a conduct forum. The filing party appears to have known that there was discussion at FTN, but apparently was not satisfied, and thought that the discussion there would not get anywhere. Either it will result in rough consensus, which is good, or it will result in an RFC, which is binding, and so is even better, or it will fizzle out, and then they can come back to DRN. Thank you for advising that the dispute was already pending in another forum. Robert McClenon (talk) 00:47, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You touched it and now it's yours. Enjoy being the Falun Gong admin for the rest of days. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 00:50, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Mentorship[edit]

Hey there, I received a notification that User:Isabelle Belato is no longer my mentor, and you are now. I've been inactive for a bit until recently, but I'm not a new editor. I'm certainly open to mentorship if you or another experienced editor believes I need it, but I'm just a little confused since I didn't know I had a mentor and I'm not sure why I'm getting the notification. Can you fill me in? Retswerb (talk) 09:05, 17 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Retswerb. Info about the mentorship program is at m:Meta:Growth and its subpages. [[:m:Meta:Growth]/FAQ|the FAQ]] tells us both that all users—including experienced ones—are assigned mentees for some technical reason. It also gives you a process for opting out of mentorship:

It is possible to refuse to have a mentor. At Special:Homepage, locate the mentor module, where you mentor's name is displayed. Click on the three dots, and click on "Opt out of mentorship". You will be able to opt-in later, but you might have a different mentor.

No fight from me S1983! You'll find the regulars here are pretty resistant to calling people antisemites in Wikipedia's own voice, and for good reason. You're trying to say 5, so you need sources that say 5. 4 + 1 won't work and 2 + 3 won't either. Sometimes people show up with 1+1, and we tell them it's not enough, so they keep adding more 1s, but it never adds up. It's a sometimes frustrating reality of the process here. unsure about copyright stuff in wikipedia[edit]

im still unsure about whether i could translate a page to another language, since im afraid that there might be some copyright issues (i dont know anything about wikipedia's law on these). is it okay if i translate the page to another language directly or should i credit the creator in the summary first? i hope you can answer as soon as possible. Bot on Indonesia-Palestine relations[edit]

Hey. Actually, what the bot is attempting to conveys is: why are you saying you protected the page when you actually didn't? But the bot is referencing the OP's mis-linked redirect (Indonesia-Palestine relations), which I didn't protect, rather than the article it redirected to (Indonesia–Palestine relations), which I did. HTH. Cheers! El_C 04:42, 23 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Makes sense! I had clicked through to the real article, so my confusion was less about that bot and more about the one that adds the padlocks not getting there soon enough. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 04:46, 23 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The padlocks don't actually matter to Cyberbot I, who only cares about whether a page is protected, and not about what MusikBot does. But one day, I hope they become friends — though, hopefully they don't join forces to take over the project at that time. Still, small price to pay for a friendship that's meant to be! How can I add myself to the site? --Bruno9240 (talk) 01:14, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Bruno9240. Welcome! If be "add myself to the site" you mean you want to register an account, you've already done it! You're welcome to start editing, and you might like to start with some of the newcomer tasks. If you're asking how to have an article about yourself, it can be a bit more complicated. You should not directly create an article about yourself, but you can make a draft, or you can request an article. There's more advice at WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY and WP:Requested articles. ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:36, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

israel apartheid rfc[edit]

I dont think that closure was appropriate or the edit putting it in either, the user who closed it, and added it, has been involved in ARBPIA areas recently. This should be closed through a request at WP:ANC and left out until an uninvolved closer finds consensus for it. I said as much at that user's talk. nableezy - 13:34, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

My view, here and in general, is that we should respect the process unless there's an unshakable case for some exception. I don't know that the closer was too involved to close it; I haven't looked into it. If true, I imagine the close will be overturned relatively quickly, and we can reverse the lead change. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 14:02, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oof. I took a second look and I see the closer got involved in the article just minutes before closing. This doesn't look right. I'm self-reverting until we get more clarity (or more uninvolved closure). Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 14:05, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Which kind of pages can I edit? Pages I can find are semi-protected, which means I can't make edits. --FriendlyUniqueUser (talk) 01:10, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi FriendlyUniqueUser! The vast majority of articles are not semi-protected. If you let me know what sorts of articles you're interested in, I can try and find some for you. Also, the bar is pretty low to become autoconfirmed and gain the ability to edit semi-protected pages: you need at least 10 edits and at least 4 days of account age. Until that happens, you can also suggest changes at the talk pages associated with protected articles. For example, if you wanted to suggest changes to Friendship, which is semi-protected, you could do so at Talk:Friendship. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 01:36, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

General SPI question[edit]

Hey Firefangledfeathers. So in in recent SPI, you stated that it is policy to not disclose IP addresses of registered users. I totally get that. My general question relates to how that work with IP-ban evaders? For instance, Andrew5 basically only ban-evades (nearly 100 times now) with different IP addresses. In a previous IP that was blocked, 96.57.76.226, the exact address was disclosed publically on the ban-message (Special:Contributions/96.57.76.226). Is there a point where that policy about not connecting a registered user with an IP become irrelevant, or did that blocking admin make a mistake? The Weather Event Writer (Talk Page) 16:37, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

As an admin, I can conclude that an IP and an account are connected, and I can report on that finding, taking appropriate blocking actions as needed. As an editor, you can conclude the same and convince an admin in order to procure the needed sanction. It's just that CUs cannot publicly communicate the results of CU tool check that connects an IP and a registered account. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 16:42, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ah ok. That makes sense. Thank you! The Weather Event Writer (Talk Page) 16:43, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Aintabli, looks to be covered by WP:GS/AA and there's been topic-related disruption that the ECR is supposed to help prevent. I noticed your 3O section there and would advise removing your recent comment about the conduct history. 3O volunteers are supposed to help resolve the content dispute and not comment on any conduct matters. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 02:42, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You are right about my comment. I've removed it now. I felt the urge to record it somewhere, but it is not under the relevant section as you've pointed out.
The disputing editor is not extended-confirmed. Their removals could have been reverted on the basis of the restriction. Is a revert appropriate at this time (also considering WP:BRD, according to which they should not have reverted/edit-warred)? Aintabli (talk) 02:49, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you can revert. It would help to mention GS/AA in your edit summary. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 02:50, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Could Tamzara be covered by the ECR? I haven't seen any disruption, but it concerns the same topic (a dance shared between Azerbaijan and Armenia). I could also list some other articles that could benefit a review on whether they are covered by WP:GS/AA. Aintabli (talk) 03:01, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's a kindness to the community to bring a request for protection (to either an individual admin or WP:RFPP/I) for articles that are covered by WP:GS/AA.
It's a kindness to the administrators to wait until there's been some evidence of disruption before doing so, especially when the article is in a bit of a grey area.
Trust your gut, and be receptive to feedback. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 03:05, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It appears that some editors are disagreeing with your closure of an RFC on airline and destination lists that you closed on 18 November 2023. Can I withdraw an SPI?[edit]

Hey, I have recently made a new report on Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Sinaxezri. I see that you looked at the previous report back in July and notified Sina Khezrii about our multiple account policy. I am not certain about this new report I filed, though. Sina.azadi has a similar username and the same overall interest in Iran, especially some specific topics like languages. Although they both edit through a mobile device, Sina.azadi previously made (unsourced?) changes on the Climate sections of various Iranian cities, differently from the previous disruptive edits of Sina Khezrii. I tried to add more evidence, but I am still unsure and wonder if I can withdraw a report. Or maybe you could comment on this and make a suggestion if I should withdraw or let this report be? Thank you, Aintabli (talk) 20:26, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I saw the filing, and I do think there's probably not enough to go on for a CheckUser tool usage. If you comment at the SPI that you'd like to withdraw, and if you remove the CU request, I can close. It'll be archived in case any other evidence comes up. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 20:30, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I removed the CU request and noted my intention to withdraw. You may close it now. Thank you! Aintabli (talk) 21:29, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from MC131313 (20:46, 18 December 2023)[edit]

Hi, I'm having a really hard time getting certain changes made to my company's Wikipedia page. I've been trying to request these edits via the talk page but haven't heard back in over a week. I do have a COI as I'm the publicist for the company but am hoping to work with an editor to get factual inaccuracies updated. --MC131313 (talk) 20:46, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MC131313. Here are some tips, in rough order of importance:
  1. Please read or re-read WP:COI and WP:PAID and disclose your status as required by both policies.
  2. Don't edit Betches directly
  3. Make requests at Talk:Betches using Template:edit COI. It helps to request the most reasonable and non-promotional stuff first, with accompanying secondary sources.
  4. Be patient. There's a backlog, though it's the lowest I've ever seen it.
None of those are simple tips, and I'd be happy to answer follow-up questions. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 02:07, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Firefangledfeathers this is very helpful, thanks so much. I have made the distinction on my user page to disclose the COI - did I apply it correctly? MC131313 (talk) 14:52, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You're heading in the right direction! The connected contributor template you added to your user page should actually go to Talk:Betches. Your user page should have Template:Paid. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 14:59, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so much! MC131313 (talk) 15:14, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

AE exemption[edit]

Can you provide me AE word limit exemption? The complaint is about me so I will absolutely need more words to defend myself. Thanks. Dympies (talk) 02:50, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dympies. I hope you're doing ok. While I'm not going to grant you an extension at this moment, I'm open to doing so in the future. I'd like to know about how many words you are requesting, and I'd like to know in broad terms what you aim to do with those words. My bar is pretty low: would any reasonable admin find it helpful to have that many additional words that address that aim? Other responding admins might have a higher or lower bar. You are welcome to either post a future request here or at another responding admin's user talk, though it would be best not to shop around too much for a generous respondent. You can also post such a request in your section at AE, and I wouldn't count those words against you. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 03:09, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

LTA page request[edit]

Hello, Firefangledfeathers!

I wanted to ask something, can an LTA page be created on A5, or should we not do so per WP:DENY? He has been persistently harassing me cross-wiki since the 12/11 SPI that I filed on him and has engaged in abusive behavior since at least 2020. I would like to create a page, or have one be created, to help other users identify his socks, and when reporting him cross-wiki, I would have a good informational page to link to regarding his abuse. If not, then what page can I link to regarding his abuse? Thank you, btw, for your efforts against his sockpuppetry. ChrisWx 🎄 (Happy holidays!) 22:43, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi ChrisWx. I'm sorry you're being harassed, and thank you for continuing to file at SPI. I don't have any experience with the LTA page creation process, and I'm not sure what the criteria are. To my mind, A5 is a good fit because:
  • their edits frequently appear to be good faith, and it would be helpful to communicate quickly why they are being reverted
  • we could use more help from editors who frequent their preferred topic areas, and more awareness would help
  • the rangeblocks do come with some collateral, and some affected good-faith users might want to know what the reasons for the blocks are; it would be more informative to point toward an LTA page than an SPI page
  • A5 hasn't changed their pattern up, as far as I'm aware, in order to avoid scrutiny; putting it slightly more out in the open is unlikely to change that approach
I say go for it, and I'll probably be able to help at least a little. If you'd like an additional layer of input, you might check in with Bbb23, who's been the most active admin at that page. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 23:01, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Clerk question[edit]

May I have a word extension if someone replies to me again? Many of Aredoros's diffs are for articles they never even edited or discussed, this is incredibly obvious bad faith battleground mentality. Shouldn't trying to portray me redirecting a recreated AFD article (Mosques list of Shusha) as something needing a boomerang be very deserving of a boomerang itself? Aredoros did not even acknowledge their insults/personal attacks in favor of throwing as much mud on the wall as possible to see what stuck, which is exactly what caused the current length that is a barrier in getting admin attention you had mentioned, and also why I cannot post this in AE. @Callanecc: @Vanamonde93: I hope it is not an issue that I asked this outside of AE because of the word limit. KhndzorUtogh (talk) 07:11, 25 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Can I get an extension to post a short response? I have already posted it, but then realized I needed to get a permission first, so I reverted myself. My apologies. Thank you. Grandmaster 11:11, 25 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I trimmed my previous comments to remain within the word limit, and added a short response. I hope that it will be OK. Thank you. Grandmaster 23:24, 25 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
KhndzorUtogh and Grandmaster, you can both have an additional 200 words. KU, I highly recommend you don't focus on the Mosques list issue, as I'm not focused on that at all, and it looks like the other admins aren't either. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 01:30, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ban on 84.241.192.0/20[edit]

I just ran into a ban you set on the IP range 84.241.192.0/20.

Just to inform you, this range is from mobile phone provider Odido, and not fixed IP's assigned to a specific person or organization. It is assigned to Odido customers who use their 5G networks. dyve 13:04, 29 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi dyve. It does not feel good to be blocking a mobile range. This one is justified by the lengthy history, frequency, and persistence of the abuse. I tried my best to narrow the range as much as possible. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 14:16, 29 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi sir, how are you? I hope you are fine. My sister searched for a novel (Konfidenz) by Ariel Dorfman, which I read, and she couldn't find any article on Wikipedia. I created an article about it & I just wanted to ask it is in my User. Do I need to move it or when I published it, it automatically went for review? I will be eager for your kind reply. Thanks --Sayedyusafshah (talk) 18:38, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sayedyusafshah, and thanks for your contributions so far. Regretfully, I had to remove and redact some of your work on the Konfidenz draft, as it was copied from copyrighted sources. I'm leaving a templated notice at your user talk page that includes a summary of our copyright policy and links to relevant policies and guidelines. Since this will be your first article, I would recommend creating it in draftspace (at Draft:Konfidenz) and submitting it for review once you think it's ready. You can read more about that process at WP:Articles for creation. You'll probably want to restore the plot and themes sections in your own words. You'll definitely need to include more content that is cited to reliable, secondary sources, things like reviews published in reputable sources. Another question on SPI[edit]

Happy new year! Wish you a wonderful 2024! I have another question that I would really appreciate your input on: I have reported an IP range for apparent block evasion, but I am now suspicious that it is another LTA sockpuppeteer instead. I am still unsure, though. It could be either one of two sockpuppeteers. It would obviously be absurd to report the same IP/user at two different places. Should I note my suspicions where I initially filed the report? But then the process could get complicated. Aintabli (talk) 21:53, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi mentee, and happy new year to you too! The notability criteria for people are detailed at Wikipedia:Notability (people). Having a Google Knowledge Panel is not a factor. The main things we look for in establishing notability are independent, reliable, secondary sources; the panel wouldn't count, as it's automatically generated. What can I do if a RfC is being compromised by canvassing?[edit]

Hello Firefangledfeathers,

I believe that the RfC I opened a few days ago (Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard#RfC:_WCE-WRD/WCD) is being compromised by WP:STEALTH canvassing. Stealth canvassing can't be proven, and it is unlikely that it will be acknowledged by the users involved, but I am certain that it has taken place.

Is an in-depth investigation possible? Or, how can I balance the imbalance? Is it possible to ping users who took part in previous discussions and RfCs on the same topic? Æo (talk) 11:49, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Firefangledfeathers, I am not sure if you are aware that Æo engaged in WP:CANVASS on the 2022 RFC you closed. He even tried to manipulate the closing himself [6].
He pinged multiple editors that he already knew would vote on his side and they came and voted in his side. See the 3 editors he pinged as a group [7] and then called all 3 in the RFC and even shows discussions where these editors had supported his views [8]). One of them did not respond and 2 months later Æo chased after him because of a guaranteed vote [9]. The 2022 RFC results show clearly that 3 of the 4 Yes votes come from AEO and two of those editors he called in [10]. A more "smoking gun" example is this one where he tried to ping another editor into the discussion because he says they supported his views [11].
On this 2024 RFC, he pinged one of the editors to the last RFC who voted with him [12] and just as expected they voted the same way as Æo [13]. The fact the he is trying to ask permission from you collect votes via WP:VOTESTACKING is disturbing since RFCs are meant to call out editors for extra opinions, not to gang up and manipulate the RFC. Ramos1990 (talk) 14:10, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Firefangledfeathers knows about the 2023 RfC because they are the admin who closed it, Ramos, and what happened with that RfC has nothing to do with what is happening with the current 2024 RfC. I pinged Erp in the general WP:RSN discussion, not during the RfC and not asking her to comment a certain way.
On the other hand, I believe that you, Ramos, have stealth canvassed to the RfC most of those who have voted Option 1, given that two of them did not take part in the general WP:RSN discussion and have collaborated with you in past editing and discussions, and their arguments are all the same as yours. I also believe that your advocacy of the sources under discussion, against all evidence provided about their problems, is over the top; Ramos, do you have any WP:COI?
I also ping the administrators who followed the 2022-2023 discussion and RfC: Acroterion and Drmies. Æo (talk) 15:13, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I always work alone and I do not ping people in general. I assume that if people are interested, they will follow a discussion and contribute to it. When you make an RFC, it spreads out to many noticeboards and if editors see it and are interested, they are free to contribute. I however, see multiple editors you called in the 2022 discussion from outside coincidentally voting your way and an editor whom you called in the 2022 discussion and this 2024 discussion, voting the same way [14]. You are quite specific as to why you called them there too referencing the 2022 discussion. I see no repeat editors on this 2024 RFC from the last one in 2022 on the opposite side. And also I never pinged anyone either.
The fact that you even say "Or, how can I balance the imbalance? Is it possible to ping users who took part in previous discussions and RfCs on the same topic? is quite disturbing considering your canvassing and the ANI I raised about it last year [15]. I rarely use ANIs. A neutral editor accepts the results of their own RFC, not try to manipulate it. I would say that your behavior is over the top, that you opened the 2022 RFC, tried to close it when consensus was against you, tried to influence the closers to the point that I had to request an uninvolved editor, raised up another RFC on the same stuff (WP:FORUMSHOP) a year later and engaged in some canvassing knowing how an editor would vote on when you made the 2024 RFC. All I have done, on my part is to provide reasons and evidence and tried to persuade editors in the noticeboards. I have not done any of the behavioral issues you have engaged in. Ramos1990 (talk) 15:49, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
1) Pinging is not the same as stealth canvassing, which is what I believe you have been doing.
2) My sentence above refers to legitimate measures to publicise RfCs, which may include the pinging of editors who have participated in previous discussions on the same topic (or closely related topics) and editors known for expertise in the field per WP:APPNOTE, in order to solve the stealth canvassing problem which I believe has taken place. My sentence does not refer to the practice of WP:INAPPNOTE, which includes vote-stacking and stealth canvassing, i.e. deliberately asking users to vote a certain way or inviting to the RfC people who one knows how they will vote.
3) You have already WP:PAttacked me two times during the recent discussion and RfC with ad hominem arguments, once again resurrecting and manipulating the facts of the 2022-2023 discussion and RfC (just like you did at ANI in Jauary 2023), and falsely accusing me of WP:FORUMSHOPPING. The latter means raising essentially the same issue on multiple noticeboards and talk pages, or to multiple administrators or reviewers, or any one of these repetitively, while I have not raised the same issue on "multiple noticeboards and talk pages" repetitively, and the new WP:RSN thread which I opened provides plenty of new material; this is what WP:RSN is made for.
4) Per WP:COICOIN, please answer to the following question: do you have any WP:COI pertaining to the sources which we have been discussing at WP:RSN? Æo (talk) 16:52, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
P.s. It is also telling that you rushed to respond here, with further attacks, when neither my initial comment here nor my notice of possible stealth canvassing on the RfC page contained any reference to you. Why did you feel called into question? In my eyes, this only confirms my suspicions. Æo (talk) 19:15, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Æo and Ramos1990, I won't be able to look into this matter until tomorrow. If there's any urgency, and if you think your case is solid, feel free to take it to WP:ANI. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 15:57, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There is no urgency. The RfC has only been open for a few days and will be open for another month. Æo (talk) 16:16, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Firefangledfeathers, if it is a disturbance to you that we discuss here, I can move the discussion to my talk page. In case, let me know. Æo (talk) 16:21, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Doesn't bother me if you talk here. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 18:45, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Firefangledfeathers, sorry to bother, but I hope to just speak to you since I would like a fair minded look into the canvassing/controlling behavior that I reported last year as I am seeing the same behavior in this RFC. Tomorrow is fine. Please review what I have presented. I feel like this 2024 RFC is going through the same controlling behavior that AEO exhibited last year in the 2022 RFC - canvassing accusations were there too. Both RFCs are about the exact same sources, by the same editor, over the same issues. I think an admin needs to really take control of the situation. RFCs should not be this complicated. Ramos1990 (talk) 20:43, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Æo, I'm inclined to give you a formal warning regarding canvassing. It appears that you have pinged editors that are likely to support your position. You have demonstrated some familiarity with the relevant policy (having cited it a few times), but appear to have fallen afoul of "The audience must not be selected on the basis of their opinions". In the future, please feel free to ping all participants of a prior relevant discussion (something analogous to the 2022/23 RFC), but selective pinging is inappropriate. Please do not ping anyone further to the ongoing RfC. I'm holding off on the warning in case you'd like to make a clear statement in your defense, and I'm willing to change my mind if I've missed something.
Secondly, Æo, I'm unable to take any action regarding stealth canvassing on the part of Ramos unless there's some clear evidence. If there's any on-wiki evidence, including circumstantial evidence, feel free to present it. Any off-wiki evidence can be emailed to me or another admin for review, but we can't take action based solely on that evidence, so you may want to skip over us and email a CU or ArbCom member per WP:BLOCKEVIDENCE. I see there's already a template at the top of the ongoing RfC related to canvassing, so the closer will probably factor that in.
Ramos1990, have you contacted anyone off-wiki to solicit their participation in this RfC?
Finally, both of you need to stop personalizing the debate. Leave comments on other editors' conduct out of it, and bring them up at a user talk page or conduct noticeboard if necessary. Given the quantity of words you've both contributed, I'd also recommend keeping further replies to a minimum. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 13:59, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding my pings, all those linked by Ramos are from the 2022-2023 thread except from this one which is from the 2024 thread, which, however, was not in the RfC, but was at the very beginning of the previous RSN general discussion (this was the original post; the RfC was started ten days later after much discussion), and in my view falls within WP:APPNOTE's editors who have participated in previous discussions on the same topic (or closely related topics) and editors known for expertise in the field (and it was more a way to mention what the pinged user expressed in the old discussion, which I thought also applied to the new discussion, than an invitation to support my views). I did not invite anyone to the RfC. Note that already in her past accusations at ANI regarding the 2022-2023 thread, Ramos likewise tried to pass off some of my mentions in the general discussion as canvassing to the RfC, while they were from before the latter's existence. Æo (talk) 15:07, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding the evidence of stealth canvassing, at the moment I can only point to the following circumstantial clues:
    1) Ramos showed up in the the RSN discussion exactly the day after I opened it, even though we normally do not interact with each other and she does not seem to follow the RSN assiduously. In the 2022-2023 discussion she did the same, and just like in the old discussion, also in the 2024 one she pushes forward her views without any consideration for the critical evidence provided. This is what leads me to think that she may have a WP:COI.
    2) Most of those who voted like Ramos in the RfC also happen to have long collaborated closely with her, supporting the same points of view, even in very recent discussions unrelated to our RSN discussion and RfC. This can be easily verified.
    3) Ramos rushed to reply to my opening message here, despite the fact that neither my message nor the tag I left on the RfC page made any reference to her or her views.
    4) During the 2022-2023 discussion an anonymous IP commented the following, raising alarms about stealth canvassing: Worth observing the Foorgood has repeatedly canvassed editors to this discussion; that's how Ramos1990 got here, for example. Æo (talk) 16:06, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    1) I have the RSN on my watchlist and saw AEO's activity.
    2) I am pretty sure I have overlapped in viewpoints throughout all wikipedia. I patrol many pages. I don't keep count. But my views are my own. Don't need anyone to speak for me.
    3) I saw "This discussion is being compromised by WP:STEALTH." in the RSN. Saw this thread in their contributions. So I took the liberty to show that actually AEO had canvassed in the last RFC and my suspicions of this one too.
    4) Like I explained in my ANI, Foorgood debated with me before. We were not allies and he acknowledged the debating [16]. Ramos1990 (talk) 17:43, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    1) It is quite doubtful that you have a whole noticeboard that you do not appear to frequent in your watchlist. In any case, it should also be pointed out that you are not even normally involved in articled about religion demographics. Your editing activity is mostly focused on Christology and related topics. Your stubborn advocacy of the statistical databases we have been discussing on the RSN raises therefore some suspicion.
    2) This does not exclude the possibility that you have contacted people outside of Wikipedia asking them to intervene. None of those users who intervened taking your side and/or repeating your arguments are regular RSN participants.
    3) This does not explain your behaviour, nor the "liberty" you took to resurrect the 2023 ANI accusations, already disproven that year: ... for the record, I see no compelling evidence of canvasing: the relevant policy has clear carve-outs for persons who have previously contributed to a discussion with the same or substantially overlapping discussion on the talk page, for anyone who has expressed an interest in any discussions on the topic, and others who have some sort of legitimate prior interest in a particular editorial topic on a particular article, just to mention one of the replies to that discussion. Æo (talk) 19:15, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It can be reversed Anirudhauttamseolekar (talk) 07:22, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Firefangledfeathers, thank you so much for your consideration. To answer your question, definitely and categorically no. I oppose numerical unfairness like this in all forms on wikipedia. Everyone has a right to be heard in a fair manner without being ganged up on. And I accept the outcomes of all discussions even if they dissent from my views. In general, I do not interreact with other editors or socialize with editors on wikipedia. To each their own. Ramos1990 (talk) 15:25, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you both for your statements. I'll review, and the next comments from me are probably going to be at your user talk pages. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 15:50, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again Firefangledfeathers, another example of selective pinging in the current 2024 RFC. One editor showed sign of agreement with AEO and the first pinged in editor [17], then he pinged her during the the RFC on January 12 [18] and as expected, she voted the same way on January 13 [19]. They all voted the same option. Ramos1990 (talk) 16:00, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi once more Firefangledfeathers, Update: On January 15 (yesterday) AEO pinged two allies on this thread [20], one of which was another one of the 4 votes in the 2022 RFC [21]. Accordingly, they voted on the same way as AEO in this 2024 RFC on January 16 [22]. AEO and 2 out of the 4 voters from the 2022 RFC are repeat voters here voting the same way so far, related to selective pinging. Ramos1990 (talk) 04:27, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It is a WP:MENTION to quote another editor who expressed themself in the related discussion above the RfC. Note that my mention of that editor referred to the long debate they had with Ramos in the discussion above, given that Ramos was repeating one of the points of her argument again and again despite that user had already refuted it; my mention did not refer to that editor's first message linked by Ramos in her reply hereabove (this is a subtle difference, but it may be telling as to Ramos' unfair strategies in debates). In any case, that editor was already aware of the RfC, given that they took part in the related discussion above and also happens to be an assiduous commentator on the RSN. There is no invitation either to join the RfC or to vote a certain way. Æo (talk) 16:14, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from MichaelK314 on User talk:MichaelK314 (14:39, 16 January 2024)[edit]

I would like to create a wikipedia page for my artist. Can you please assist? --MichaelK314 (talk) 14:39, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MichaelK314. You'll find a lot of useful info about creating your first Wikipedia article at Help:Your first article. When you say "my artist", it appears you may have some personal or professional connection to the artist in question. If so, you may have a conflict of interest, and you'd need to read and adhere to our COI policy. Starting with article creation and working when you have a COI are tough, so you may want to start with some smaller edits to existing articles while you learn the rules and norms. Question from FGusa on User talk:FGusa (14:44, 19 January 2024)[edit]

Dear Wikipedia Administrators, I am Faris Gusic, current Web Administrator on International University of Sarajevo. I was constructed by my supervisors to update the IUS Wikipedia page since it was last updated years ago. IUS has been changed since that day, new study programs have been added to IUS, few rules regarding public information changed ; and overall I edited the text for good look too. So could you please explain to me or at least give me permission to edit and that edit keep published https://www.ius.edu.ba/en/people/faris-gusic here is the link of my profile on Main IUS Website. And my wikipedia acc is linked to my business mail Thank you in advance. --FGusa (talk) 14:44, 19 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from WXYZ2468 (04:24, 20 January 2024)[edit]

Hello, how do I change a page title? --WXYZ2468 (talk) 04:24, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi WXYZ2468. We refer to the act of retitling a page as a "move", and you can learn about moves in general at WP:MOVE. You're able to move most pages yourself, though you should use the requested move process if you suspect the move might be controversial. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 04:29, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thank you. I dont think it will be a controversial move. WXYZ2468 (talk) 04:43, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Samia Suluhu Hassan GA renomination[edit]

Hi there! I've returned from my wikibreak and I just thought I'd let you know that I (finally) made your recommended changes at Talk:Samia Suluhu Hassan/GA1 and renominated the article, in case you were interested in picking up where we left off. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 07:29, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Thebiguglyalien. I'm glad you did. I think that article is close to passing. I have a bit on my plate right now, but I imagine I'll be able to pick up the GA2 review within the next month, and hopefully sooner. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 15:05, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - you have inadvertently just fully protected Ram Mandir after a request from User:Thewikizoomer, who has imposed his version by reverting at least four times today (you weren't to know that, because it goes back a lot of edits!) I had warned him for 3RR and asked him to revert his last edit or I would block him, but of course he is now unable to do that. I know about The Wrong Version, but I don't reckon there should be a reward for it. Black Kite (talk) 15:19, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

2 of the mentioned diffs. were not related to any dispute (about construction), at the time of editing. The lead section is clearly disputed hence justifies Full protection. Thewikizoomer (talk) 15:22, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As mentioned here, talk page discussion was opened and dispute resolution was asked. Thewikizoomer (talk) 15:23, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think the wikizoomer version was reverted a few minutes before the protection. The Herald (Benison) (talk) 15:25, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe I've lucked upon that pinnacle of full protection: a version that no one is happy with! In all seriousness, if there are any unambiguous issues with the protected version, or if there's consensus for anything that needs to be changed, I'd gladly edit through the protection.
Thewikizoomer, if it's true that you broke 3RR, you're lucky to have just gotten a final warning. The revert rules apply even if the reverts are related to different content. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 15:44, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I asked for the diffs related to 3RR, the given diffs. didn't appear like their words. Thewikizoomer (talk) 15:47, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Firstly I thank you for offering to edit, the primary dispute was about the Babri Masjid section in Ram Mandir article.
In the article's lead, this section

"The site is the former location of the Babri Masjid which was built in 16th century CE. The idols of Rama and Sita were placed in the mosque in 1949, before it was attacked and demolished in 1992.[8][9][10] In 2019, the Supreme Court of India delivered the verdict to give the disputed land to Hindus for construction of a temple, while Muslims would be given land elsewhere to construct a mosque.[11] The court referenced a report from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) as evidence suggesting the presence of a structure beneath the demolished Babri Masjid, that was found to be non-Islamic.[12]",

appears to be misleading. Firstly I think it belongs to the history section of the article more than the lead and secondly, it says that the site was previously a mosque called Babri Masjid which was built in 16th century CE and the idols of Ram and Sita were placed in the mosque in 1949.

It is misleading because, the Babri Masjid was built there after destroying a ram temple there which was there before this mosque which is very clearly mentioned in the article of Babri Masjid here1 and here2. The court ruling about Ram temple being there before the masjid was built should also be equally mentioned in the lead and also it should be placed in history rather than the lead. A little explanation seems right too. Thewikizoomer (talk) 15:56, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I was referring to this in here 1 above, taken from Babri Masjid article,
The mosque was located on a hill known as Ramkot ("Rama's fort").[1] According to Hindus, the Mughal commander Mir Baqi destroyed a pre-existing temple of Rama at the site. The existence of this temple is a matter of controversy.[2] The Archaeological Survey of India conducted an excavation of the disputed site on the orders of the Allahabad High Court. Various materials have been found during excavation which suggest the presence of a Hindu structure beneath. The Allahabad High court noted that the Babri Masjid was not built on vacant land and the excavated underneath structure was not Islamic in nature.[3][4][5]
Starting in the 19th century, there were several conflicts and court disputes between Hindus and Muslims over the mosque. In 1949, idols of Rama and Sita were placed inside the mosque, after which the government locked the building to avoid further disputes.[6] Court cases were filed by both Hindus and Muslims asking for access.[7]
here 2 refers to this,
On September 2010, the Allahabad High Court upheld the claim that the mosque was built on the spot believed to be Rama's birthplace and awarded the site of the central dome for the construction of a Rama temple. Thewikizoomer (talk) 16:02, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thewikizoomer, can you please move this all to the article talk page? Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 16:33, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I copied this to the article's talk page. Thewikizoomer (talk) 16:39, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Since User:thewikizoomer does not seem to understand that they've done anything wrong, even after the evidence was provided to them, and they are clearly POV warring, I have pblocked them from this article for a month - with the note that if they promise not to edit-war here, they may be unblocked straight away. Responded there. Thanks, BK. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 19:17, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Thewikizoomer. I'm happy to answer your questions about edit warring. The diffs you linked are to reverts of vandalism. It's one of the exceptions to the 3rr rule. See WP:3RRNO. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 04:54, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I was trying to do the same. The users happened to change the construction status to complete in one of the diffs. Others users tried to revert edits about the Prara Prathistha event updates in effort to restore their preferred lead. Thewikizoomer (talk) 04:59, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I was not even involved in the lead dispute first. My problem at the time was, in order to display their version of lead, they ignored all the edits in between and reverted to their wished version. Couldn't they do it manually? Thewikizoomer (talk) 05:00, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also how fair were the administrators to leave this user without blocking when they made personal attacks against me and didn't promise to not make such attacks any more - Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive1145 - If such attack was made on Blackkite, I'm sure by now they would've blocked them indef Thewikizoomer (talk) 05:01, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
2 of the four diffs clearly show about the construction thing - https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ram_Mandir&diff=prev&oldid=1197941363 and https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ram_Mandir&diff=prev&oldid=1197878131 Thewikizoomer (talk) 05:03, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Moreover if I had bad intentions, why would I open a dispute resolution and start a talk page discussion? I even said about it in the notice reply. - https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Thewikizoomer&oldid=1197950614 Thewikizoomer (talk) 05:05, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also an editor with bad faith won't request for full protection. My intention was to be civil and seek help from admins in dispute resolution. Thewikizoomer (talk) 05:06, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Even after all these signs I was blocked by Black kite and they want a promise? As I said first, my edit history talks about my commitment to following policies. Thewikizoomer (talk) 05:06, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's a lot of questions! It's getting late where I live, so I'm going to bed. I'll answer as many as I can tomorrow. One before I go: I don't think you had bad intentions, and I see plenty of evidence that you have good intentions and the skills needed to be successful here. I hope you stick around. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 05:09, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, thank you for offering to answer questions even though you're not the user that has blocked me.
A block log always holds this black mark on my username.
Anyways, thank you once again and good night @Firefangledfeathers :) Thewikizoomer (talk) 05:19, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • Answering a few comments here: if you're ever questioned/warned about edit warring and one or more of your edits fits one of the WP:3RRNO exemptions, you should say so. I'm not sure which revert of yours was anti-vandalism, but it helps also to either use an edit summary like "rvv" or use the default ("unded revision ##### ...") with no additional explanation and mark the edit minor. Sweeping reverts that inadvertently or carelessly undo good work are a problem, sometimes an understandable one when an article is being edited so rapidly. Usually the response is to start a talk page section with something like "Hey @user, your revert caught up these good edits. Do you object to any of them, and if so why?" If an editor has a pattern of throwing out the baby with the bathwater, that's something worth bringing up with them at a user talk page, potentially then following the steps of WP:CONDUCTDISPUTE. Experienced editors—or ones with advanced permissions like adminship—being treated differently than less experience editors is also a problem. I'm not sure there's a solution, except to call it out when you see it. I would try not to get too hung up on comparing your situation to others. Yes, you have a block to your name, but it doesn't stop you from being a respected or valued. Many of our best editor and admins have a sizable block log. Hope this helps. Logging in CTOPS enforcement[edit]

Ram Mandir talk page[edit]

Hey Firefangledfeathers, I am currently facing a problem with a new editor, The Indoman 360 he is constantly asking to remove the word 'hypothesized' from the article and since the page is fully protected and you are an admin, it would be perfect if you settle this problem.Thanks. Harvici 10:19, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Harvici, I don't see anything problematic about that users conduct. There's active discussion about what word to use, and I can't "settle" the dispute until consensus develops. If local consensus can't be reached, there are more steps of dispute resolution available. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 14:33, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Bro I was not telling u to remove the word it is a discussion and everyone has rights to give their word and even to be on a debate when discussions are on.

Requesting an opinion[edit]

Hello Firefangledfeathers. I would rather not be a part of another AE discussion so soon, and I try to avoid creating them out of single issues, so I was hoping to ask for your opinion on an incident. Is this an example of casting aspersions and a personal attack? KhndzorUtogh (talk) 22:51, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi KhndzorUtogh. Answering your last question first: I would not characterize that comment as being a personal attack or a casting of aspersions. In my interpretation, the editor is saying that your actions in that discussion are evidence of bias. There are other possible interpretations, but absent any evidence for them, I'd assume good faith. Since the purported evidence of the misconduct is present in the discussion, it can't be aspersions, and it's less likely to be so if the accusations aren't repeated. And accusations of bias are not in and of themselves personal attacks.
All that said, our dispute resolution policy says "Try to avoid discussing conduct issues on article talk pages." Regardless of the merits of the accusation, bringing it up at that venue is disruptive to the process. Unless withdrawn, there are few imaginable good outcomes. Most of the time, editors called out in the wrong venue then defend themselves, and the defense is then rebutted, and so on, distracting everyone from the content dispute at hand.
I think you would be on solid ground if you wanted to politely ask the editor to remove those parts of their remark (which have not yet been responded to as of this comment) and say you would be willing to discuss any conduct dispute at your own user talk page or his. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 00:23, 31 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
WP:WIAPA: Using someone's political affiliations as an ad hominem means of dismissing or discrediting their views
"Anything else is a promotion by a biased editor. And KhndzorUtogh Yes, I'm calling out here. This isn't even a remote attempt at viewing the topic of the article and what the title should be through a NPOV lens"
Isn't this exactly what a personal attack is described as? KhndzorUtogh (talk) 22:53, 31 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm familiar with the policy, and that's the part I re-read when you asked for my opinion. (In case it helps, for considering aspersions, I re-read WP:ASPERSIONS and the relevant bullet point at WIAPA).
I think the main factor here is that I didn't see the other editor blaming the alleged bias on any political affiliation (or any other affiliation). I think we should be able to—in the proper venue—communicate to other editors that we think they are displaying bias and letting that bias interfere with good encyclopedic decision-making. Again, I don't think that editor did so in the proper venue, nor did they do so in the best possible manner. It might be that other comments by them make it clear that they were specifically trying to discredit your remarks based on some affiliation of yours, but I'm not aware of any other relevant comments to consider. Question from Cowingzitron on User talk:Cowingzitron (21:59, 3 February 2024)[edit]

Hello, I just regained access to my wikipedia account (user: cowingzitron), which is to say, my dumb a** finally remembered my password from years ago :-p . In the last couple of years though, I have made a few edits without logging in, from the IP address 216.197.76.113, which I would like to have associated to cowingzitron. Specifically, I made all the edits from that IP address except the oldest one (which relates to Steel Pulse). Could an admin please help me move my edits from the IP address 216.197.76.113 to cowingzitron? Thank you in advance for your help. -- cowingzitron --Cowingzitron (talk) 21:59, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Congrats on regaining your account, Cowingzitron! There's no way to move the edits to your account. You can declare on your user page that you used to edit as that IP. If you ever join any discussions in which you also commented as the IP, you may want to make that connection clear. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 23:03, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for clearing that up for me.
My confusion arose because I had read the "Help:Logging in" article on Mediawiki and mistakenly thought it applied to Wikipedia as well.
Specifically, in the Mediawiki article, under the section What if I forget the password or username?, it says that a user in my situation can ask an admin to move their IP-published edits to their user account once they regain access.
After you replied, I read the corresponding "Help:Logging in" article on Wikipedia, which (not surprisingly) matches your response.
While I am mildly disappointed that my edits cannot be moved, I am glad I learned more about Wikipedia and its help resources (Mentors!).
Thank you again for your help.
P.S. I dig your username and taste in poetry. Cowingzitron (talk) 02:00, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to disappoint! Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help. PS: Thanks! Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 02:13, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

24h block?[edit]

Hello,
Could the page be protected if the block is 24h, I don't see any evidence of it stopping after a block. Geardona (talk to me?) 02:22, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not optimistic, but I do plan on keeping an eye on their contribs. It would help if you do too. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 02:32, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, as for the page protection, would pending changes work? I am a reviewer and can manage any future issues post block. Geardona (talk to me?) 02:52, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If we can resolve an issue by blocking one editor, we rarely use protection. If the editor resumes the disruption, we'll block them again and clean up as needed. This does not keep us perfectly safe, but I find myself trying to balance safety and the potential that a block might lead to a behavior change. We'll see. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 02:55, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, my thought was a partial block maybe? Using edit requests? Geardona (talk to me?) 02:56, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Since there have been copyvio issues at other articles (and other projects), I think it's unlikely that a pblock would be effective. They'll either resume copyvio anywhere, and be blocked, or change their ways. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 03:00, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So we are in last chance mode basically? This is it unless they figure stuff out, and fast. Geardona (talk to me?) 11:52, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Zeinab Alamgard (13:11, 8 February 2024)[edit]

How can I use Talk page? --Zeinab Alamgard (talk) 13:11, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Zeinab Alamgard. If you go to any article, there's a link at the top, near the title, that says "Talk". You can also navigate to Talk pages using the search bar. Every talk page starts with the "Talk:" prefix and what follows is the associated article name. You could try "Talk:Serena Williams", which should take you to Talk:Serena Williams. Once you're there, the way to use talk pages is by discussing improvements to the article. You can learn more about the guidelines for how to act at talk pages here. You indicated that Elliot Page's birth name was never notable. I'm reverting you're change, but I'm sure you're aware that WP:N doesn't apply to birth name content within an infobox. 2023 Bud Light boycott[edit]

You mentioned to me that you reverted some edits on this article due to "editorializing." But I was not editorializing; I was adding context. In fact, I deleted a lot of editorializing that was already in the article, precisely because it lacked context. And in the process of doing so, both liberal and conservative bias got deleted, thus making the article more compliant with NPOV.

Also, you posted something on the article's Talk Page about reliable sources. Just because a particular newspaper doesn't have a reputation for being reliable doesn't mean it can't be a reliable source under certain circumstances. It can be a reliable source if the veracity of the information it provides is self-evident (e.g., a photograph of a celebrity smoking crack, or a video of someone saying curse words loudly to the camera). Conversely, just because a news outlet does have a reputation for being a reliable source doesn't mean that the words it prints are true. The Chicago Tribune once said that Thomas Dewey had defeated Harry Truman in the 1948 election, but we all know that wasn't true.

You can't always use the "reliable source" rule as a guide. Sometimes, truth which is self-evident can appear even in the tabloids, and if you ever read something that you know is false, you shouldn't put that falsehood in a Wikipedia article just because a "reliable source" says it's true. I mean, if Wikipedia were around in the 1930's, would you have written an article praising Adolf Hitler simply because the mainstream media at the time was giving him acclaim? Greggens (talk) 06:08, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There are parts of your comment that would be best addressed at the article talk page. If you post there, I'll do my best to respond to you tomorrow (it's sleepy hour in my timezone). I agree with you in general about evaluating material based on more than just the general reliability of the source it's in. The next important question is "if this content only shows up in poor sources, does it belong in an encyclopedia?" Congrats on your Godwin's law speed run. How do I make a title for a page and or edit it? --Goldfishy1 (talk) 03:01, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Goldfishy1. If you're looking to create a new article, there's a lot of great advice at "Your first article". You'll be able to decide on the article title, and the relevant policy is "Article titles". If there is an existing article with a title that needs to change, we call that "moving", and there's guidance on how to do so at "Moving a page". Your account is unable to create new articles or move existing ones until you've made ten edits, but you're pretty close already! February 2024[edit]

Information icon Hello, I'm Jamarr81 (talk). I noticed that you made a reversion that didn't seem very civil, so it may have been removed. Wikipedia is built on collaboration, so it's one of our core principles to interact with one another in a polite and respectful manner. If you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you.

From WP:Vandalism:

The malicious removal of encyclopedic content, or the changing of such content beyond all recognition, without any regard to our core content policies of neutral point of view (which does not mean no point of view), verifiability and no original research, is a deliberate attempt to damage Wikipedia.

From WP:NORESVAND:

... if the edits were made in good faith, they are not vandalism. Assume good faith yourself... discuss your concerns with them. Comment on the content and substance of the edits...

Information icon I noticed that you have reverted to restore your preferred version of an article several times. The impulse to undo an edit you disagree with is understandable, but I wanted to make sure you're aware that the edit warring policy disallows repeated reversions even if they are justifiable.

All editors are expected to discuss content disputes on article talk pages to try to reach consensus. If you are unable to agree, please use one of the dispute resolution options to seek input from others. Using this approach instead of reverting can help you avoid getting drawn into an edit war. Thank you. Jamarr81 (talk) 00:38, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi Jamarr81. It looks like you've read our civility, personal attacks, and edit warring policies. Do you still believe that my edit was both vandalism and edit warring? Could you explain why? Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 02:25, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Tewdar[edit]

Hello, thanks for the shining bright work on my draft. Do you have any special tools to check for copyright violations? I ran it through Earwig and it gave me 60.9% (Violation Possible), but it doesn't seem to be highlighting any possible close paraphrases or anything as far as I can tell. I was thinking of moving it to article space later today, so if you could take a quick look that'd be great. 😊  Tewdar  10:20, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with your read on the Earwig report. That's the only tool I'm aware of. I did check a few sources while fixing up citations and copyediting, and I didn't see anything concerning. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 14:01, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, okay. I thought I ran the tool on Cornish Bronze Age and it didn't come up with anything, but then someone found a close paraphrase after I sent it to article space. Sometimes I make notes and then somehow rewrite it exactly as it was in the original source... 😕 Anyway, I think it's probably good enough for article space now... time for me to go back on strike I think. Thanks for helping. 😁  Tewdar  14:07, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Why the call for reversion[edit]

Hello. As you've requested. In 2023 an RM was held (which I think I took part in) concerning whether or not to move NHL Conference Finals to lower-case. The result was -no consensus- to move. It would be advisable to hold another RM there, if one believes a consensus to move, is now attainable. GoodDay (talk) 02:27, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from 79lives (18:19, 27 February 2024)[edit]

Hey, this isn't quite relevant to the topic of editing. But I was just wondering I could make a group about articles that don't exist yet. It has a similar purpose to stubs but rather saying

This article is a stub. You can help Wikipedia by expanding it.

I would it contains a {[non-article}}. I don't know non-article seems a bit strange on Wikipedia but perhaps a different name. I would like to own a group based on this though. --79lives (talk) 18:19, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi 79lives. I'm not sure I fully understand your idea. Is it that non-existent articles would have text on them that invites expansion, like stub articles do? Are you looking to categorize non-existent articles? Something else? Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 00:12, 28 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Protection request[edit]

Hello.

Can you temporarily protect the Tripoli, Lebanon article? An IP user has erased large and sourced paragraphs, which I undid. This person will likely do so again.

Yours sincerely, Morgadir (talk) 09:22, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Morgadir Which would also leave you unable to edit. I note that the IP was reverting edits by a sockpuppet. Amd as they were made by a sock, that is within policy. Doug Weller talk 09:38, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, the content added by the blocked sockpuppet was sourced and which corresponds with the text. It should not be erased, just because it was added by a sockpuppet. Emptying sections by erasing sourced content, should be avoided. The article should be temporarily protected, and be edited by administrators. Morgadir (talk) 12:30, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Morgadir. Editors are permitted to undo edits by sockpuppets per WP:BANREVERT. You are also permitted to restore those edits, as long as you're willing to take responsibility for the content. You may want to look into the reasons the sockmaster was blocked. If it's something like subtle vandalism or copyright violations, you may want to scrutinize the restored content to make sure it's free of those issues.
I am not going to protect that article at this time, as the level of editing has been low, and it's not clearly disruptive. For a second opinion, and for future protection requests, I recommend WP:RFPPI. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 13:16, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the recommendation. Morgadir (talk) 14:14, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Arbitration Enforcement[edit]

I am writing here because I don't want to make AE a battleground. My concern is the definition of WP:GAME and how Alpoin117 (talk · contribs)'s disruptive edits are irrelevant to BilledMammal's filings of AE when they accused Salmoonlight of 1RR for reverting what were eventually determined as disruptive on ANI and resulted in indef of Alpoin117. BilledMammal also accused me of "When approached they rejected my concerns and told me to come here" when what I had said was to "bring me (the issue) to the Adminstrator's Noticeboard"[28], not Arbitration Enforcement, which mischaracterized me in bad-faith. -- Sameboat - 同舟 (talk · contri.) 03:08, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sameboat, ARBPIA is drowning even with 1RR and it'd be much worse off without it. The bar for 1RR breaches can't be "ultimately determined at ANI to have been disruptive". If any participant in the AE walks away thinking they can breach 1RR because someone else is being disruptive, both that individual editor and the topic area as a whole will be worse off.
I wouldn't belabor the AN/AE distinction. If you really wanted to press the case, I imagine BM would strike and reword. It's such a small point that it's not worth it. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 03:13, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think policies surrounding contentious topics are also here to allow what is considered disruptive edits to be dealt swiftly (e.g. labeling Bushnell's Facebook last message "misleading polarizing" without reliable source by Alpoin117 as cited in BilledMammael's AE filing[29]), not safeguard such edits by 1RR. I think I should stress this once more that, Alpoin117 was blocked previously before editing self-immolation of Aaron Bushnell. Alpoin117's edit on the self-immolation article was first reverted by user:B3251[30] instead of Salmoonlight, later also by user:Di (they-them)[31], so there was a clear understanding that Alpoin117 was a disruptive player by that time, and Salmoonlight should not be liable of 1RR accusation for dealing with such circumstance. -- Sameboat - 同舟 (talk · contri.) 03:44, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You're saying that before Salmoon's revert:
  1. Alpoin117 had a prior, non-active block
  2. Two other editors had already reverted Alpoin
Number 1 is irrelevant in determining whether a 1RR breach is appropriate. Number 2 is also, but it should lead to seeking out administrator attention. It looks like that's what happened. In the future, if you see a previously blocked user in an edit war with two other users, would you respond by breaching 1RR? Would you recommend that others do so? Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 04:48, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I would revert instantly to not let the disruptive edit be visible any second longer, while seeking administrative action. Self-immolation of Aaron Bushnell was (and still is today) a recent event with a high traffic, any exposure of the vandalized version would be very damaging to both in and out of Wikipedia. My question for you is, would another previously uninvolved editor reverting Alpoin's edit be treated as a 1RR violation? What difference would it make if it was not done by Salmoonlight the second time onward? The end goal was still the same. -- Sameboat - 同舟 (talk · contri.) 05:03, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you think it was obvious vandalism, then that's an exception to 1RR. Our disagreement about that can be sorted out at AE. For other disruptive edits, your plan of reverting instantly is a poor one, and it's likely to lead to a sanction if followed. No, a previously uninvolved editors revert would not be a 1RR violation. One of the end goals is to reduce edit warring, and that goal is aided by limiting editors to one revert per 24 hours. We still get edit wars with a bunch of people reverting once, but it's less severe than it would be without the restriction. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 05:07, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe you are right, but I would defend Salmoonlight's actions and free them of any sanction for this particular instance, warn them the principle of 1RR if you must. In regard of BilledMammal, they violated 1RR on self-immolation of Bushnell[32][33] as well but received no administrative disciplinary warning which is beyond my understanding. -- Sameboat - 同舟 (talk · contri.) 05:19, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't be opposed to just a warning. Best case scenario, they recognize their mistake and commit to acting differently, and no warning is needed. At least in those diffs, BM did not violate 1RR. Consecutive edits count as one revert. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 05:21, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You are not going to agree with me, but I call BM's actions gaming the system. Let's conclude this conversation. -- Sameboat - 同舟 (talk · contri.) 05:23, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from DontDrinkChunkyMilk (13:52, 4 March 2024)[edit]

Hello! I’m new to this and any suggestions would be greatly appreciate! Where are you from? What’s your fave thing to read about? --DontDrinkChunkyMilk (talk) 13:52, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi DontDrinkChunkyMilk. If you're looking for suggestions for where to start editing, you might be interested in some of the newcomer tasks. I moved around a lot growing up, so the "where are you from" question gets complicated, but I'm sort of from California. I like to read Wikipedia (obviously) and science fiction. How about you? Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 13:56, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I’ll check that out, THANKS! I’m from the LA area. Paramount, South Gate, Downey are my stomping grounds lol. Wiki is a fun place to start reading about new things I’m discovering. Just before I dive into a subject with everything my AuDHD gives me🤣 it’s a blessing and a curse lol!!
thanks for getting back to me. And if I have any questions, I’ll come ask you.
btw, my name’s Jenn DontDrinkChunkyMilk (talk) 14:02, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Blessing and a curse is right! My spouse has ADHD; sometimes it really seems like a superpower. Happy editing, and do come back with questions! Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 14:05, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
