Model article[edit]

We could get ideas from Dilek Peninsula-Büyük Menderes Delta National Park, which is a good article.Chidgk1 (talk) 16:45, 4 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Was the coast previously expanding?[edit]

Text used to say

Although the coast had been expanding[1][need quotation to verify] it is now retreating, mainly due to less sediment coming down the river due to dams built upstream.[2][3]

but I changed it because I could not find quote in https://www.cevdetyilmaz.com.tr/wp-content/uploads/Bafra-Ovasinin-Beseri-ve-Iktisadi-Cografyasi.pdf If you are a native speaker please could you check Chidgk1 (talk) 08:36, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Modern map?[edit]

Is the map linked from co-ords enough? Probably better to have something in article as readers may not see co-ord link Chidgk1 (talk) 09:00, 8 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Chidgk1, I've taken a look at this and unfortunately I think this is a quick fail. I think it fails criteria 1A and 1B in particular, and needs a lot of work before making it to GA status. The main issues I see are:

  • Prose is very choppy. It's a lot of short, declarative sentences with no flow between them.
  • WP:REPEATCITE occurs quite a bit throughout.
  • WP:OVERSECTION, there's sections that only have a single line in them. Virtually all of "Ecosystems and habitat" could be condensed to a few paragraphs with no subsections.

I think the content is there and there's the potential to meet GA, but not without a significant rewrite. I'd recommend looking at Dilek Peninsula-Büyük Menderes Delta National Park for a good example of the type of prose you should be aiming for. If you need some help with the rewrites, you can put a request in at WP:GOCE.

I hope this doesn't discourage you from continuing to work on this - I can tell you've put a lot of effort. If you'd like, I can provide a more detailed list of things to improve on the article's talk page. grungaloo (talk) 22:46, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestions for improvement[edit]

Hi Chidgk1, here's some suggestions for improvement.

  • I'd recommend looking at Glacier National Park (Canada) or Dilek Peninsula-Büyük Menderes Delta National Park as examples.
  • Move History up to right after the lead.
  • Geography should probably only be a single section with no subsections.
  • Ecosystems and habitats should have at most 2 sections, Flora and Fauna.
  • Don't try to write exhaustive lists of all the things that live in the park. Look at Glacier National Park for an example - they list some key species, but not everything.
  • Tourism, Agriculture, and Management could probably be lumped into a single section.
  • Don't worry too much about the map, the one you currently have is fine.
  • The infobox lists 3 different websites, really it should only have 1 official site.

Really the big thing to focus on is writing flow. Flow can be hard to describe, but you want your text to be engaging to readers. Try to create more complex sentences, link closely related sentences together, or start a sentence, then in the dependent clause give the reason for why that's important or noteworthy. Here's an example of a change you could make.

70% of bird species in Turkey have been recorded and the delta is important for birds which directly cross the Black Sea. White stork breed here and there are many other species such as: grey-headed swamphen and great white egret. There is a bird ringing station called Cernek Ringing Station. At Ondokuz Mayıs University there is a bird research center, which has ringed 165 thousand birds from 175 species in the delta.
The delta is an important area for birds, being a main stopover for those crossing the Black Sea. Of the bird species observed in Turkey, 70% of them have been observed in the delta. Because of the large variety of birds, the delta is home to a to the Cernek Ringing Station and the Ondokuz Mayis Univeristy bird research center. These facilities have ringed over 165,000 birds from 175 different species. White stork, grey-headed swamphen, and great white egrets have been know to breed here.

The flow in my example goes from stating the area is important, to showing it's important by giving the number of species seen, to then backing that up with the mention of the research stations and how much banding they've done. Together, this builds the idea that the delta is important for birds.

Hopefully this helps. Good luck and happy writing! grungaloo (talk) 16:35, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks those are useful ideas - I hope to return to this article in a couple of weeks time to come at it afresh Chidgk1 (talk) 17:24, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
