This course explores topics, questions, and debates in relation to how power relations impact the history and implementation of medical constructs and labels, even shaping (and being shaped by) notions of Gender and Race. We explore, thus, some of the origins of medicalization as a form of oppression as well as some of the origins of health inequities. Students contribute to articles that touch on topics that we address.

Timeline

Week 5

Course meetings
Wednesday, 9 February 2022
Milestones

Prof D will post an interest discussion board this week, and you'll reply by Monday the 14th, so that she can create your groups by the 15th.

In class - Introduction to the Wikipedia assignment

Welcome to your Wikipedia assignment's course timeline. This page guides you through the steps you'll need to complete for your Wikipedia assignment, with links to training modules and your classmates' work spaces.

Your course has been assigned a Wikipedia Expert. You can reach them through the Get Help button at the top of this page.

Resources:

Assignment - Get started on Wikipedia

Create an account and join this course page, using the enrollment link your instructor sent you. (Because of Wikipedia's technical restraints, you may receive a message that you cannot create an account. To resolve this, please try again off campus or the next day.)

Milestones

This week, everyone should have a Wikipedia account.

Week 6

Course meetings
Monday, 14 February 2022   |   Wednesday, 16 February 2022
Assignment - Choose possible topics

We'll have a DISCUSSION BOARD where you'll share your interests and from there, I will try to make the most aligned groups I am able! Disc Board will be for MONDAY 2/14.

PLEASE NOTE that below we have a whole set of options from prior semesters as well as potential new articles that haven't been previously worked on.

Resource: Editing Wikipedia, page 6

Assignment - Evaluate Wikipedia

If possible, it makes sense for your group to review the same article, if you've already selected which one you'll be working on. This exercise you can go through solo, just make sure you communicate your thoughts with your partner/s. You may use the COLLABORATION googledocs on Canvas for ease of connection and communication to get the ball rolling.

PLEASE NOTE THAT the Wiki Edu exercise will direct you to a "form" to complete your evaluation exercise in. This is how you'll ultimately complete the exercise.

Here are some sample articles students from previous semesters of this class have worked on -- check these out both to get an idea of what it is you might choose to do, but also to evaluate them, if you like. Also, a few times I've had students revisit articles that were edited in previous semesters and the result has always been good so just bc it's been touched before by students in a previous version of this class does NOT preclude you from also working on it. ALSO on a few occasions students have created an entirely new article. This is an option just a bit more work -- worthwhile if you feel strongly about it!

Ableism

Atypical Anorexia (edited to add topic, though no one has worked on this yet and I don't even think Wikipedia has an article on it, so that could be an exciting contribution indeed!)

Black Maternal Mortality in the US

Climate change in the United States

Discrimination against people with HIV/AIDS

Environmental Racism

Eugenics in the United States

Fatphobia (edited to add topic, though no one has worked on this yet and I don't even think Wikipedia has an article on it, so that could be an exciting contribution indeed!)

Gender discrimination in the medical profession

Genetic Discrimination

Genetics and Abortion

Maternal health

Mental disorders and gender

Postpartum depression

Race and health in the United States

Sickle cell disease

Transgenerational trauma

Undertreatment of pain

Week 7

Course meetings
Wednesday, 23 February 2022   |   Tuesday, 22 February 2022
Milestones

Everyone has their groups (and teams) now, and everyone has a COLLABORATIONS googledoc for your team in Canvas.

Please go to "timeline" in the Wiki Edu and complete exercises from Week 6 if you have not done so. Then, review the health topics rules in Week 7 ahead of class, ideally!

By the end of this week, I'll try and make sure each group has selected their target article so that we can assign these in the Wiki Edu Dashboard.

Assignment - Review the rules for health topics
In class - Research Tutorial

Melissa Jones from the library will be creating a dedicated research guide for us, which I will link. She will hold a research orientation session in class for us.

Steve Fernie from web services will also give us a mini Wiki Edu orientation.

In class - Discussion

Week 8

Course meetings
Monday, 28 February 2022   |   Wednesday, 2 March 2022
Assignment - PLAN OF ACTION Drafted

BY class time on Wednesday, 3/2, before we go on Spring Break --

Plan of Action: make sure it's clear on your group's googledoc (A) what your target article is, and (B) what your thoughts are so far as to what your proposed edits to your page are going to consist of: are you adding sections? If so, what are they and where might they fit in the overall "table of contents"? What "content gaps" do your proposed edits address? Are you revising and rewriting aspects of the page in other ways? Who will be working on what?

Network of Pages: create a part of your googledoc where you will drop links of related wikipedia pages --- this is pages that you might want to link to your page, for example; or pages you might want to link yours *to* -- so, related content and/or categories.

In class - Discussion
Assignment - Add to an article
Assignment - Exercise

Week 9

Course meetings
Monday, 14 March 2022   |   Wednesday, 16 March 2022
In class - Talk Page Post

Now that you have your plan of action and target article, if your article *exists* you'll make a talk page post to indicate to other editors that you'll be working on it. This helps to make the process smoother.

Assignment - Start drafting your contributions

Guiding framework

Milestones
Milestones

You probably have some feedback from other students and possibly other Wikipedians. Consider their suggestions, decide whether it makes your work more accurate and complete, and edit your draft to make those changes.

Resources:

  • Editing Wikipedia, pages 12 and 14
  • Reach out to your Wikipedia Expert if you have any questions.
Milestones

Now that you've improved your draft based on others' feedback, it's time to move your work live - to the "mainspace."

Week 14

Course meetings
Wednesday, 20 April 2022
Milestones
Milestones

Continue to expand and improve your work, and format your article to match Wikipedia's tone and standards. Remember to contact your Wikipedia Expert at any time if you need further help!

You can treat the presentation as your ultimate deadline for fine tuning.

Week 15

Course meetings
Monday, 25 April 2022   |   Wednesday, 27 April 2022
In class - INFOGRAPHIC

We'll take a little time in class on Wednesday for you and your groupmates to review the Canva/infographics assignment and make your work plan/design plan so that you can be ready by Monday!

Assignment - In-class presentation

Everyone will do short presentations on their wiki projects on the last day of class, and these will include your Infographics!

We have a neat setting in the dashboard that allows us to view and track contributions that we can use to highlight your contributions.

Assignment - Continue improving your article

Now's the time to revisit your text and refine your work. You may do more research and find missing information; rewrite the lead section to represent all major points; reorganize the text to communicate the information better; or add images and other media.

NOTE that media and images bit is optional in part because the requirements for images and media are quite stringent.

Assignment - Final article

It's the final week to develop your article.

  • Read Editing Wikipedia page 15 to review a final check-list before completing your assignment.
  • Don't forget that you can ask for help from your Wikipedia Expert at any time!

Week 16

Course meetings
Monday, 2 May 2022
Assignment - Reflective essay

Guidelines will be up on canvas. This essay is your opportunity to lay out your process and reflect on the project. Much of the work that goes into Wiki contributions can appear invisible (like code!) and I know you've all worked hard and thought hard, so this is your opportunity to create a record of this, and to adequately value your efforts. Also, since about one more week will have elapsed, it will be an opportunity to note any changes to your work or your page, and reflect on those, as well.

~3 pages; more detailed guidelines and guiding questions will be in canvas.

Milestones

Everyone should have finished all of the work they'll do on Wikipedia, and be ready for grading.
