The Ōtautahi Christchurch monthly meetups are a chance for Wiki people (Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikisource, and so on) to get together. Everybody's welcome, beginners or experienced.

• Foundation Cafe, ground floor of Tūranga, the Christchurch Central Library. We can move to a table space in the library when everyone has arrived.

What have we been up to?

• MurielMary (talk): Not much editing, mostly thinking about and discsussing plans for the Christchurch WikiCon in May 2025. Have confirmed dates and venue: 16 to 18 May 2025 at Ara Institute of Canterbury. More info to come, but at this stage please save the date and let other editors know. Looking forward to the editathon next Saturday.

• Alexeyevitch^(talk): I have been doing a lot of work this month (primarily on Wikipedia), Marshelec, Gadfium and I have been making improvements to Foveaux Strait, it was a small start class article before and is now on its way to a GAN, it is already a good exampler of what a "good strait article" should be in my opinion. Did some work (mostly improving refs and re-arranging content) on the Southern giant petrel article which is now B-class. And the Haast's Eagle has potential to be a GA (IMO).

Glocal Wiki Advocacy Meetup, Universidad Católica, Santiago

• Giantflightlessbirds: Preparing for the edit-a-thon coming up on May 18th at the Christchurch Art Gallery, focussed on the Ink on Paper exhibition artists and works. I attended the Global Wiki Advocacy Meetup in Santiago, Chile, May 2–4 (report to come): have returned with a bunch of souvenir stickers for anyone who wants one.
• David Palmer//cloventt ^(talk) Working on the Christchurch article mostly. Been spending some time in the WP:GAN space getting a feel for the process of reviewing an article for Good Article. Started work on Draft:Kaiapoi Pā as its own dedicated article split from Kaiapoi. Started the ball rolling on a proper Christchurch TaskForce under WPNZ with the help of Marshelec. Trying to arrange childcare for the editathon on the 18th.

• Coordinate Me is a Wikidata campaign in May, focussed on adding coordinates to Wikidata items. There are prizes!
• 18 May, 10:00–16:00: Christchurch Art Gallery Edit-a-thon

Outcomes and tips

• We have three copies of Ōtautahi Christchurch Architecture: a walking guide by John Walsh to give away to local Wikipedians keen to inprove articles on Christchurch architecture.
• I'm interested in helping improve Haast's eagle to GA status, as that's one of my areas of expertise and I know some of the researchers concerned, have most of the publications etc — as well as more photos and sketches. This would be a great resource if we do it right, and it gets around 700 views a day, more than any book or article about Harpagornis has ever had. —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 22:10, 11 May 2024 (UTC)

  Hey there, I am interested likewise to get this up to GA but there is still some way to go because I feel like the prose isn't engaging, but good progress has been made so far. • Suggestion that we talk to local history groups: one that meets in the library, attached to UC, and inviting Geoffrey Rice.
• Kate Sheppard House gives public local history talks and might be interested in a talk on womens' history in Wikipedia, perhaps with follow-up training
• Potential for making more use of the Featured Picture platform in both Wikipedia and Commons, for photos that are useful for articles (the former) or technically excellent (the latter).
• How to convince a professional photographer to donate photos? First, offer to create an article about them, with a donated headshot (if sufficient sources exist). Then ask about photos of one specific thing, encouraging them to donate less-valuable, "dud" pics. Ask for a single good photo for an article without one and nominate it for featured picture, notifying them when it goes on the home page. Finally, ask about all their photos. If they do donate, make sure there's a follow-up event to deploy the photos, and do publicity.
