History of California Golden Bears football

Hi Cake, thanks for the History of California Golden Bears football review, can you recommend some specific upgrades, so the quality goes up to at least a B? Thank you. Rybkovich (talk) 05:22, 16 October 2020 (UTC)

Sometimes and almost certainly in this case it's the article has no rating whatever and I can tell an article like that is "at least" a C. It probably is a B or better if I plodded through it; I don't see any real problems with it. A lead (or is it lede) and a once through with GOCE could probably help it though, since it was asked. More images probably help too - where's the wonder team? Cheers.

Technical issues with GA

Sorry, but could you replace Template:GA nominee by Template:GA in Talk:Korean mythology as instructed in Wikipedia:Good article nominations/Instructions#Passing? This hasn't been done, so the bot isn't adding the GA icon in the main article. Thank you again for the thorough review!--Karaeng Matoaya (talk) 07:26, 16 October 2020 (UTC)

I have not used that template before or seen on it any of my GAs, but I will do so. Despite leaving the nomination template, it's a GA; rated as such for its wikiprojects. A small thing I overlooked was archiving. The waybackmachine at archive.org can archive sources, so that none of the links in your sources will ever go away. Also, while I passed it for a reason and think it's largely fine, I was never the ace grammar student, so feel free to use the Guild of Copy Editors if I neglected any style. Cheers. Heraclitus

Appreciate it Bafflegab. Your wordsmithing had me think of a just-so story where Heraclitus invents the Chewbacca defense. Cake (talk) 23:15, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
Haha, I'd like to read that.. I think... :D I've now satisfactorily concluded my editorial confabulations; I've added a good deal of [citation needed] templates, especially in the lower sections "Influence" and "Depictions in art", where citations are lacking; you'll need to deal with these before nominating for GA status. Good luck with your planned GA nom. :) Cheers, Baffle☿gab 05:19, 23 October 2020 (UTC)

Leroy "Red" Bethea

Hello Cake, in response to your question from a couple of years ago, Red Bethea was from Trenton, Florida. It's a short ride from Gainesville. After his football career he had several businesses in Gainesville, Cedar Key and St. Augustine. Cheers, Twalls (talk) @Twalls:

Appreciate it very much.. Underrated contributions to the 1928 team. Familiar with Gainesville and Saint Augustine but have to plead ignorance on little ol' Trenton. Yours. Cake (talk) 18:44, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello

Hey Cake. You asked me if Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold should be merged with the Columbine massacre article. Judging by the talk page histories, I can see that it's been discussed before and the consensus was not to merge. My opinion is the same. Purely from a biographical perspective, there is enough secondary literature out there to write a comprehensive article about Harris and Klebold.

As per Notability guidelines: "The criminal or victim in question should be the subject of a Wikipedia article only if one of the following applies: [point 2] The motivation for the crime or the execution of the crime is unusual—or has otherwise been considered noteworthy—such that it is a well-documented historic event. Generally, historic significance is indicated by sustained coverage of the event in reliable secondary sources which persists beyond contemporaneous news coverage and devotes significant attention to the individual's role"

The Columbine High School massacre article is already very big, and some of that material needs be moved to Harris and Klebold's. I don't want to glorify murderers either, but because this is a "well-documented historic event", with "sustained coverage", I really don't think these articles will be merged anytime soon. Thanks, LM150 11:42, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply. Pardon the message and the delete. Indecisive on how to approach the subject, obviously. I didn't feel that discussion had enough people, but also confess most seem on your side. I appreciate citing the proper policy, though I must say I find it opaque, and suppose I would do with Cho as an example - who seems to me the paradigm case of 'shouldn't have an article, he's nothing else but an attack, has an article because of copying the Columbine articles, which have two separate articles because of early internets and unwise perp focus.'
Trying to ignore that example, say Tim McVeigh for the policy. Still seems like could just be a section of the OKC bombing article.
And of course "A person who is known only in connection with a criminal event or trial should not normally be the subject of a separate Wikipedia article if there is an existing article that could incorporate the available encyclopedic material relating to that person" is my contention. We have the article for the criminal event.
Perhaps we are dealing with how Columbine sometimes seems the transition between serial killers and mass murder, with more surveillance and more spectacle. Technically a mass murder, though a very long period of deceit and premeditation, and e. g. Klebold wore the serial killer shirt from Reservoir Dogs. For Bonnie and Clyde or the Zodiac Killer or Ted Bundy having their own article it makes good sense, but strikes me as bizarre for a singular crime, as I try to show with the Scott Peterson example, which also seems to be just two articles because the wealth of internet info predates wikipedia, and at one time both articles would have been ignorant of each other. Aside from that, it's just the same articles with different "early lifes" that could be in the same. The likes of Lanza not having an article show this particularly well. But of course not up to me. Cheers. Cake (talk) 13:24, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

Italian school

Hey, I noticed you made some changes to Template:Ancient Greek schools of philosophy to sort some of the pre-socratics under the "Italian school" following the grouping by Diogenes Laertius. It's my impression that recent scholarship generally doesn't treat the Italian school as a coherent group that actually existed (unlike the Ionians) and so I reverted those changes.

Also, I noticed you didn't put an edit summary for any of those changes, which makes it harder to figure out what your intentions were - I apologize if I've assumed them incorrectly here! - car chasm (talk) 20:21, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

Yes forgive me, I should do more edit summaries, but if I did it all the time it would seem a huge task, so I tend to be lazy with it instead. The short version is I was not aware scholarship treated the Ionian school as a coherent group either. Doing it the traditional way seemed to better organize it to me: starts with the Milesians rather than the Pythagoreans, groups Empedocles and Anaxagoras as they are typically as Pluralists rather than Empedocles as nowhere and Anaxagoras as a Milesian, it better fits Xenophanes to be classed with Pythagoras and the Eleatics, and so on. Same for Xeniades. While I don't claim it was as coherent an institution as Oxford, the concept of the Italian school seems to show its worth in its influence on the skeptical philosophers. But that said I'm no specialist, so never much mind a revert. Cake (talk) 02:45, 24 March 2023 (UTC)
While I don't have any scholarly support and this is just a noob's conjecture, something else it seems to me to consider for the existence of an Italian school of philosophy, or a set of loosely related philosophers in Magna Graecia confined by geography if not also related in doctrine, is how Galen mentions a Sicilian school of medicine started by Empedocles. Note that Aristotle came from a family of doctors and had what seems Empedocles's four elements. Medicine much as science much as botany isn't much yet a separate branch of inquiry it seems to me. The other medical schools seem to have been places like Kos and Knidus near Ionia (like Hippocrates) and Kroton in Italy, surely related to Pythagoreans, like Alcmaeon of Croton. I think Cyrene also had one. Cake (talk) 03:24, 24 March 2023 (UTC)

Thank you bafflegab. Hi again, I've now finished my c/e. I've added some {{cn}} templates where direct quotations aren't followed by a citation (in "Awards and honors" and "Death", and an uncited sentence in "Film". In my last session tonight, I've added {{clarify}} templates in "Chamberlain–Russell rivalry", where there are two ambiguous uses of "he" where two males are being discussed. Anyway, good luck with the article. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 02:14, 22 May 2023 (UTC)

Southwestern Intercollegiate Athletic Association

I noticed you created Template:1904 Southwestern Intercollegiate Athletic Association football standings for the conference and I noticed references to it in [1] [2] those links. Was this a full fledged conference? I looked in several of the teams' media guides and they do not reference it.- UCO2009bluejay (talk) 03:42, 19 July 2023 (UTC)

I would assume so. Media guides are hardly the authority on pre 1930s conferences. The Southwest is even more obscure than the Southeast, and several times schools will be ignorant of their SIAA or SoCon affiliation. Note also the TIAA. Cake (talk) 08:29, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
Mainly asked because I didn't see an indicator of a conference championship in the templates. I have really been blitzing the Oklahoma articles as of late, and don't want to WP:OR two unrecognized confernce championships without proof (the OK History seems to indicate but isn't specific enough for season articles). Thanks-UCO2009bluejay (talk) 16:41, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
Looks like sometimes they say they were in the SIAA when they were in the SWIAA, reading it as Southwest. Cake (talk) 03:39, 20 July 2023 (UTC)

Template:1905 Southwestern Intercollegiate Athletic Association football standings

Hi this Template:1905 Southwestern Intercollegiate Athletic Association football standings and the Southwestern Intercollegiate Athletic Association has come up in a discussion regarding the Conference affiliation for the Oklahoma Sooners and I was wondering what resource you used to back up the naming because I have multible sources that states that Oklahoma was an Independent during the 1905 college football season along with Texas and ever other school listed in the above template. And can not find any sources for this Southwestern Intercollegiate Athletic Association stating it ever existed. Dcheagletalkcontribs 23:13, 30 July 2023 (UTC)

American football stubs

Wikipedia guidelines were changed early last year to require that all sports biographies have at least one piece of WP:SIGCOV (not counting database entries). In recent months, there have been efforts to draftify en masse sport substubs that do not comply with this requirement. Accordingly, we have begun a campaign to improve gridiron football biographies that could be targeted in a similar RfC. This list identifies some of the articles that are the most vulnerable based on the new guidelines. A number of the vulnerable articles are ones that you created:

John Adams, Ap Applewhite, Al Barnes, Bill Brunson, P. T. Bryan, C. C. Countess, J. G. Davis, Dolph Eckstein, Roy Estes, Ed Finlay, Ray Forsberg, James L. Harris, Charlie Holm, Fred Hume, Hal Hunter, Manning Jeter, Duke Kimbrough, Winslow Lovejoy, Alton Marsters, W. K. McClure, Marion E. Meadows, V. E. Miles, Garrett Morehead, Dick Mulvehill, Gene Oliver, Ary Phillips, Jim Tom Reynolds, Ted Ross, Dooch Sherman, T. T. Sherman, Emmett Sizemore, Ellwood Wilson

The list is not intended as criticism of you or anyone else, as such stubs were permitted prior to the change in policy. Instead, the purpose is to encourage each of us to clean up these stubs so as to avoid draftification or deletion. I am hoping that you will revisit as many of these articles as you can to add the required SIGCOV. Thanks, Cbl62 (talk) 04:16, 3 August 2023 (UTC)

Alabama Dan Boones

Seems the Dan Boone who played football and baseball at Alabama was Alfred M. Boone, not James Albert Boone, who played Major League Baseball. It's confusing as James Albert's brother, Ike Boone was a teammate of Alfred M. at Alabama. Jweiss11 (talk) 02:14, 1 February 2024 (UTC)
