Help with columns

I would like to divide the Personnel section in Casey Abrams (album) into three columns, but have never done anything like this before. I took a look at Help:Columns, but found that page to be very confusing. I've also tried looking at other articles that have done this sort of thing, but couldn't quite figure out what they were doing. Is someone able to explain to me how I would do this, or at the very least, point me to a well written guide? --Jpcase (talk) 16:24, 25 March 2015 (UTC)

Use {{colbegin}} to start using columns, {{colend}} when you're done, so for three columns you may want to do the following:

Yes, {{lorem}} is what was confusing me, because while I assumed that it was simply a place-holder nonsense word, I thought that I was supposed to copy over the text in the grey box to the top of the article section, replacing "lorem" with the first word of each column. --Jpcase (talk) 17:19, 25 March 2015 (UTC)

I've just been going over the "Philanthropy" section and am wondering if you could let me know where you found the information about McCreery participating in the City of Hope Celebrity Softball Game every year since 2011. I would have liked to go through with this nomination, but simply don't have the time right now to address such a broad issue as the one that was raised by the reviewer. That said, I'm not sure whether that issue (having too many quotes) is one that should hold back the article in the DYK process. I've never nominated an article for DYK before, so I'm not familiar with the expectations, but I thought that the main requirement was simply for the article to be referenced and neutral. If you think that the article could be accepted without having to rewrite anything, then I would have the time to continue with this. @Mannanan51: I'm not sure what is meant, but the topic still seems to be one that would demand a link to "somewhere". If we don't want to do the disambiguation page, then how would you feel about simply linking to the article on Sussex, or perhaps to be even more specific, the Governance section of that article? Hi there - I removed the link to Sussex County Council because the context is artwork within a piece of fiction. I suppose it could be linked to Sussex County Council (disambiguation) but I don't see the point. Also please note that Sussex is linked in the first paragraph of the synopsis. @PKT: I believe that the link already points to the disambiguation page. See the same-named section above, in which I discussed the matter with another editor. If you want to change the link, so that it points to the Governance section of the Sussex article or the History of local government in Sussex article then that would be fine. But I don't see why we would remove the link entirely - the link isn't for the sign itself (which I agree, would be pointless), nor is it to the county as a whole (which I agree, would be redundant). It's to the County Council, which doesn't receive a link anywhere else in the article, and which is the sort of obscure, real-world reference that most readers will most likely know little (or nothing) about; thus, making a link useful. --Jpcase (talk) 14:38, 21 July 2016 (UTC)

1st piece: This was written in 2005 and I'd omit the first sentence, referring to TV series of the time in the "Neighbours" genre and to a defunct celebrity website.

SpongeBob SquarePants

Hello Jpcase, and thank you for all of the improvements you have made to the SpongeBob SquarePants article. I restored the "Voice actors" section on the page today after it was removed and replaced with the bare-bones text from last month. The edit description you left indicated you didn't want to keep the expansions on the article because the same sources and info are used on List of SpongeBob SquarePants cast members. However, the sources and content from the version you restored is also all taken from the cast members article. The expansions are all sourced so I don't see any reason to remove everything, especially since it really hinders the quality of the section. @SBSPfan: Hey, thanks for the message! I totally agree with you that the Voice Actors section should be expanded from the "bare-bones" version that was around before your involvement. Personally, I don't like seeing the same exact phrasing used in multiple articles - so the edit summary saying that you had copied content from the cast members article made me a little wary. But it looks like you made at least some changes to the transferred content, so that may not actually be too much of a problem (perhaps we can discuss further).

My main concern is that some of the info you copied over is potentially inaccurate. One of the things that I noticed back when I first started editing the SpongeBob SquarePants article a few years ago is that while most everything had been paired up with a source, many of the sources being used didn't actually contain the information for which they were being cited. The Tom Kenny radio interview is an example - in that, Kenny mentions that he had used the SpongeBob voice for a minor character in Rocko, but he doesn't specify who that character is. I've gone through countless sources while editing the SpongeBob article and have yet to come across anything identifying that minor character as a "female alligator named Al". So quite a bit of information had to be resourced - and some information had to be removed entirely. I never got around to correcting sources in any other SpongeBob articles though. It may be that all of the other information you added is properly sourced - but until someone goes through and checks each source (thoroughly), we ought to treat all of the information in List of SpongeBob SquarePants cast members as potentially inaccurate.

I do appreciate all of the work that you've been doing though! I'm not sure how long I'll be involved with editing the SpongeBob SquarePants article, as I've dabbled with it on-and-off for quite awhile now and don't want to invest too much more time in it. Thank you for looking into that, Jpcase! I re-checked the interview as well and there is no mention of "Al" or any name for the minor character he voiced, so I removed the statement from both articles. It took a while to look the section over again but all of the other information under "Voice actors" does agree with the listed references. I don't know for sure, but the unsourced sentence about the exact identity of Kenny's character was probably added as vandalism long ago and never removed. SBSPfan (talk) 05:07, 2 July 2017 (UTC)

@SBSPfan: Wow - I'm impressed that you were able to go through all of the sources so fast! Thanks for taking that on!

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if the SpongeBob voice really did originate with a female alligator character named Al - but if so, the identification was likely made by a fan, rather than by a professional source, and as such, would have to be considered Original Research. A lot of the improperly cited information that I encountered in the SpongeBob article turned out to be true; it just required a lot of digging around, until I could find a useable source.

If all of the other information that you added checks out okay, then I'm alright with leaving it in. I'd still like to see any instances of copied phrasing changed up - but that's just a personal pet peeve. So far as I'm aware, there isn't any Wikipedia rule saying that you can't copy and paste content from one article to another. Depending on how long I stay involved with the SpongeBob article this go round, I may consider rephrasing or removing some of the content from that section. But that's not my top priority right now. Overall, I'm pretty happy with your additions.

By the way, I see that you're new to Wikipedia as of this year - so I just want to say welcome! It looks like you're getting the hang of things, but if you have any questions, just let me know.
