Turkish municipal governance[edit]

Yeah, this is how I've generally understood it, and it's not really that much different than the set-up in most other places save for the fact that the state seems to have more power at the local level than in other countries. What I was confused about was 1. the power of district and/or provincial center municipalities in 'regular' provinces, and 2. whether the the district/provincial center municipalities in a metropolitan municipality is coterminous (share's the same boundaries) as the as the district in which they are located. I've been trying to figure this out for awhile, and what would make this easier is seeing a boundary map showing municipalities in metropolitan municipalities and provinces to show the difference. But I've never been able to find one.

A lot of confusion, I think, is due to Turkey differentiating between il merkezi, ilçe merkezi and belde in the provinces, without there not apparently being any difference in their powers and rather just that the former two serve as administrative seats of their respective provinces and/or districts. We have that distinction where I'm from, too (i.e. "capital" city of a state, "county seat" of a county), but I think we put less focus on this 'status.'

Anyway, if you'd like to copy some of this information over with the sources (and perhaps add new and better sources and info), that would be great. I wouldn't mind seeing the article deleted, but I very recently proposed an article for deletion, and it seems like a very difficult process and I'm burnt out from it. @Criticalthinker oh yeah no worries, I actually created the "Local government in Turkey" article after seeing that there was no article covering the topic.
I think I can create a map showing jurisdiction in metropolitan and non-metropolitan provinces, sourced from Turkish law of course, but it might take a few days. I do agree that different types with no difference in power is confusing but it is what it is I suppose.
I'll let you know once I manage to put together a diagram! Gwro (talk) 06:51, 21 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
