Uploading photos[edit]

Hi, I noticed you put in a photo request but if you want the photo available faster, you can go to Commons:Upload and follow the instructions there. Uploaded photos must be public domain or creative commons with attribution, see the upload page for links to detailed explanations of what these terms mean. Once uploaded on Commons, images can be shown in Wikipedia and any of the sister projects in the normal way (see Wikipedia:Picture tutorial).

Additional points to note:

  1. You have to have an account on Commons, this may have already been created under the same name and password as your Wikipedia account (see Special:MergeAccount, for a summary of where your account has been created on other projects).
  2. If your photo is not taken by you, then you must be absolutely clear about the source and permission from the copyright owner or photographer when you upload. It may be easier to load the photo to Flickr first, change the licence there to 'Attribution Creative Commons'. This has the advantage of making the upload a lot easier, avoids questions about who your friend is and what the evidence of permission is and the photo gets verified automatically by a bot sometime after upload. If the photo does get challenged for evidence of permission you may need to follow the Commons:OTRS process and confidentially supply an email from your friend with a declaration of their release into the public domain; yes it's a drag but it may be worth reading through the information on the OTRS page for your information. An alternative is to email your photo, see Wikipedia:Contact us/Photo submission, but this may take a few days before getting processed.
  3. To upload, the photo needs to be on your local hard-drive. Don't worry too much about cropping and editing, this can be done by uploading improved versions after the original is uploaded.
  4. The photo may have information on the file in the form of EXIF image data added by the camera. This will be visible after upload so make sure you are happy that the make of camera, when it was taken etc. will be consistent with your upload information.
  5. The photo can be checked using TinEye after upload, so if it appears on websites which claim 'All right reserved' or similar then it may get marked for deletion.
  6. If you have some difficult questions about copyright they can be raised on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions for a definitive answer.

A simple standard guide is at Help:Files. Thanks, (talk) 11:40, 22 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

SuggestBot picks the articles you might be interested in based on the articles you've edited and using a number of different techniques: following links from them to other articles, matching articles based on their content, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedia users. It tries to recommend only articles that others have marked as needing work, such as stub articles that need to be made longer, clean-up articles that need writing help, and so on. Your contributions make Wikipedia better -- thanks for helping.

If you choose to participate we encourage you to leave feedback on these suggestions, which you can most easily do here by editing your user talk page. We'll stop by later to read them.
