Non-talk pages that are automatically signed

Hi, I noticed that you've been adding Category:Non-talk pages that are automatically signed to the CFD daily logs. I want to say, first of all, thank you! I also want to offer an idea: Do you think it would be better to add the category code under the date header rather than to the bottom of the page? That way, the category code would not appear when editing the discussion that is at the bottom of the page; by extension, there would be less risk of someone accidentally removing the category. Hi Allen4names,

I've noticed that you've added Template:Query web archive after some references and external links where the original link isn't dead. I'm not sure I understand the purpose of doing that. Why link to archives if the original page still is available? I'm concerned that the archive links might make people think the original page is dead when it really isn't. Also, I'm not really sure why we would want links to four different archives even if the original link is dead. I've found discussion on the subject of links to archives atWikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Archived_citations and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject External links/Webcitebot2, but I didn't see any consensus to use this template on articles. Shouldn't another RfC be held before the template is used in articles (or was there another discussion that I haven't found yet)? Calathan (talk) 15:59, 15 December 2011 (UTC)

That template is NOT intended to repair a dead link although it can be left if the referenced page has been archived by more than one archiving service. If the link is dead the "archiveurl" parameter of a citation template or other alternative should be used to explicitly indicate that the link is dead. If you feel that an RfC is needed feel free to start one but I would prefer that you did not remove that template from articles it is used on, or at least make sure that an archived version of the reference (not the "live" wayback) is available before removal. – Allen4names 17:46, 15 December 2011 (UTC)

It is intended to be used to prevent the problems associated with link rot. The idea is that anyone can check to see if a reference has been archived. Both the Wayback Machine and WebCite have been down at time when I wanted to archive a web reference. There is a delay before pages archived by the Wayback Machine are indexed and failures have occurred involving all three services (not counting the Bibalex Wayback). I hope this help you understand why I use this template. – Allen4names 18:08, 15 December 2011 (UTC)
I'm still of the opinion that this isn't something that should be added to articles without first having a discussion to decide that it is a good thing. I think that most people reading Wikipedia articles won't have any idea why those links are there and may misunderstand them (either thinking they mean the original page is dead, or that they mean the page has already been archived at each of those sites). I'm not sure if I'll start a RfC myself just due to lack of time and interest, but if you plan to use that template on a large number of articles I think it might be a good idea to hold a RfC first. Mania review

Hey! Just wanted to explain why I removed the Mania review. Unfortunately Mania is one of those sites where just about everyone with a keyboard and a computer can upload a review, so the only reviews that can be used on Wikipedia must be by a staff member of the site, which that user wasn't. I liked the review and thought it was well written, but it's just not usable for Wikipedia. I like to equate it to the equivalent of someone leaving a review on Amazon.com, for the most part. If you can show that she's a notable person or that she was at one point a staff member, then it can be used, but until then it just can't be added in any format.Tokyogirl79 (talk) 05:27, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

You should note that there are as yet no user reviews like the one linked to in this Kanokan review by Chris Beveridge. Is there a reason why you deprodded Anime Crossroads? The user who had prodded it had stated that they had found no reliable sources to help the article out. The only thing the article has going for it are the Primary Sources, without third party sources present it is hard to confirm notability here. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 17:47, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

Fix to watchlist changes

Thank you for the css fix for the watchlist "enhancement" - which solved that eye-sore.

Just curious if you had a similar fix to the ugly green block-text when viewing an article history tab. That appears to have been added at the same time as the watchlist change. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 17:36, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

Update, just learned that the green background appears to only be on the MonoBook skin ... wasn't forced onto Vector as yet. I've started a sub-section of the Village Pump discussion to try to find a cure for this one too. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 19:54, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

Request for assistance

This is a request for your assistance in setting up a gallery of photos.

I have lots of photo arrays of different airplanes, and would like to set up a series of galleries as pages in the category "User galleries" to keep track of them, add new photos, and add/edit their links.

In trying to find out the correct syntax to use to set up the galleries, I have not been able to find out the specific syntax to use to set them up in the Q and A materials, or from an admins. Perhaps I haven't asked the right question.

So, could you provide the syntax you have used to set up your gallery?

I suspect you are reffering to my gallery at Wikimedia Commons. You can simply click the edit button then copy and modify the text as you need. – Allen4names (IPv6 contributions) 18:55, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

I think that I can "fill in" the gallery "page" once established.

The simple thing to do, which I obviously have missed somehow, is how one sets up or establishes a gallery page in the first place.

That is: when you edit -- category "User galleries" to set up a gallery page, what are the "magic words" / syntax that results in a gallery such as "User:5shot/Oscar" to be set up for adding photos to it using the gallery tag.

Sorry for my ineptness, but I don't know how to do that based on the info I have found to date. Perhaps I have looked in the wrong places or whatever.

Your help would be appreciated.

KML-related redirects

You could have just tagged them for CSD G6 as housekeeping. When a non-admin moves a page, we can't suppress the redirect that's created. If the article is moved, its KML has to be moved. Since the redirect is not needed, it's a housekeeping function, and you could tag them for CSD G6 and call it a day. Initiating an RfD is following process for the sake of process sometimes. note on notable people listings

Hi, Allen. Myself and several others place that same note whenever we have to prune "Notable people" lists. Although what you changed it to say is true, another interpretation of what you wrote is "You must have enough referenced information to write an article on the subject". So, if that is true, why not let people think that is the case? Another referenced biography in Wikipedia is a much bigger improvement to the encyclopedia that an addition of a person to a list, don't you think? Gtwfan52 (talk) 16:19, 9 September 2012 (UTC)

I will answer with another question. Shall the perfect be made the enemy of the good? If you are going to insist that an article be written before a link to it be made then I guess that your answer is yes. I for one am not going to insist that everyone who edits Wikipedia get an account first or even go to Articles for creation and have one made before adding a link. So if you see a red link in such a list and WP:BIO is satisfied by the references please write the article instead of removing the link. – Allen4names (IPv6 contributions) 02:52, 10 September 2012 (UTC)
And you shall feel how you feel and I shall feel how I feel. You are welcome to refine or redact that note wherever you see it, but as there are several people interested in place articles that use the exact same text, you will be in the minority. Notable lists are one of the single biggest targets of cruft vandalism on the whole project and I (and others) feel a bit of chilling is effective as a deterrent and completely warranted. It may have a chilling effect but not the one you intend. These lists are not justified by what they add to the articles they are in but to show if there are more articles that should be written.
