Demented Dragon is an inactive Canadian publisher of RPGs and graphic novels heavily influenced by manga, Japanese comics.

History[edit]

Authors and staff[edit]

Demented Dragon employed several artists and writers within its active years. Haruka Miyabi was responsible for illustrating Lafcadio Hearn's Japanese Ghost Stories while Sean Michael Wilson wrote the book. It was Miyabi's first work published in English.[1][2] Wilson later became involved in several other titles from various publishers, including becoming the editor of the AX manga collection.[3][4]

Amanda Tomasch (credited as "Amanda T."), as well as being the concept artist and writer of Midnight Blue, is also Demented Dragon's publication editor.[5][6]

Publications[edit]

Demented Dragon listed 7 unique series, 3 of which had second volumes planned, cumulatively totaling to 10 distinct volumes set to be released.[7] The company released their first graphic novels on February 6, 2007: NECROphealia and A Steel Wing Shattered.[8][9] Several volumes of various series carry release dates within the winter and summer months of 2007, but they are not listed as being available.[7] These titles include Midnight Blue, The Misadventures of Don Quixote, and the second volumes of A Steel Wing Shattered, Stray Crayons, and The Phoenix Chronicles.[7] Additionally, Lafcadio Hearn's Japanese Ghost Stories can no longer be ordered from Amazon.com and is listed as being out of print.[1] Yoko Molotov, author of Stray Crayons, stated that Stray Crayons was intended to be a trilogy but that she couldn't currently publish the last 2 volumes, citing "complications with [her] publisher". As a result, she made the second volume available online.[10] The Phoenix Chronicles was intended to be 6 volumes in length.[11] Of the titles listed on their website, Demented Dragon uses "13+", "15+", and "16+" as an age rating scale.[7]

Merchandise[edit]

By popular demand, Demented Dragon began selling merchandise and apparell for The Phoenix Chronicles and Midnight Blue in May 2007 via the CafePress online store.[16] A Steel Wing Shattered merchandise was made available in July 2007.[16] 50 shot glasses featuring a design from the series were produced for the Otaku Omaha 2007 anime convention.[17] Lafcadio Hearn's Japanese Ghost Stories posters were given out at events and included as a limited time extra for orders placed at Demented Dragon's online store.[16] Graphic novels and related goods, such as calendars, posters, and original illustrations, were given away as prizes on official forum contests.[18] Graphic novel prizes were occasionally autographed copies.[19][17] Demented Dragon merchandise featuring the company logo, including steins, buttons, and shirts, were also possible prizes.[17][20][21]
