Romantic art is visual art composed in the early 19th-century that adheres to the principles of Romanticism.

Romantic art was deeply rooted in ongoing art debates notably engaging with Renaissance debates between disegno and colore. The Romanticists reinterpreting these to emphasize emotion, nature, and individual expression.

The artists of the Romantic Movement discarded the reverence for form, proportion, and order that was predominant in the Neoclassical movement. Classicists had strict rules, such as the Golden Ratio and the portrayal of historical or mythological figures, in order for art to be considered "good" or "worthy". These traditions were inherited from ancient Greece and Rome and considered sacrosanct by the art establishment, who would often argue over theories about what good art was.

Going against classical principles, the Romanticists claimed that art could be good based solely on how it makes the viewer feel, regardless of what objective rules the art does or does not adhere to. Their works included exotic and supernatural themes, often in scenes of natural grandeur or human drama.
