I have been a student of Chinese language and linguistics since 1980. I like to define myself as a sinologist who specializes in matters of language rather than a linguist who specializes in Chinese.

I like to read widely, especially diverse factual information. I find myself catching typos in Wikipedia articles and feel impelled to change them. I love sound, including both music and phonetics. I am interested in tracing the history of how people have thought about what they do and how those thoughts have changed over time.

I am a native of New York City. I work far from New York, but I moved back to New York after September 11th, feeling more at ease living with whatever danger there is here than having to experience it vicariously from afar. My round-trip commute, with all the delays, is now typically about 10 hours, which I always complete in a single day. Fortunately, I don't need to be on site every single weekday of the calendar year; on average, I think, I am there one day in four. But I seem to work incessantly.
