Geopolitical situation in 685/86[edit]

  • West: Arabs lost Ifriqiyah province, probably as far east as the approaches of Cyrenaica to Berbers and Byzantines.
  • North: Arabs territory along the Cilician coast? Still controlled Antioch. Holdings in the interior frontier zone unclear.
  • East: Arabs had not yet broken out of Khurasan, extent of control in Sistan unclear.
  • Umayyads essentially controlled Egypt as far south as Aswan and dependencies (Cyrenaica) and Syria.
  • Zubayrids and pro-Zubayrid forces controlled western Upper Mesopotamia, Basra and its eastern dependencies (Ahwaz, Fars, Kirman) as well as Khurasan and Sistan, the Hejaz (Mecca, Medina, Ta'if, Tabala) and Yemen.
  • Al-Mukhtar controlled Kufa and its northern dependencies (Sawad, Mada'in, Mosul, Adharbayjan, Armenia, Hulwan, the Jibal)
  • Najdat Kharijites controlled Yamama and Bahrayn.
  • Al-Julandi emirs controlled Oman independently.
