@Uanfala: What notation does the "Proto-language" section use? Is it IPA? It's not explained to readers, so I don't even know what template to use if it were to be tagged. That's one of the reasons I just left it at {{cleanup lang}}, in the hopes that someone else would be able to make more sense of it. -- Beland (talk) 22:39, 11 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The notation in the proto-language and basic vocabulary sectoins appears to be IPA, but the fauna names look like they're in a practical orthography. You're right that these things should be made explicit, but I don't think the cleanup template is likely to result in that happening. – Uanfala (talk) 11:26, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, great. I added a {{contains special characters}} with links to IPA notation so readers can figure out what the sounds are. On the other talk page, you were asking if screen readers would in practice be able to handle obscure languages. In this case, since we have the highly standardized IPA notation which is the most common in linguistic circles, I'd say it's likely to make a difference for a well-written screen reader, and thus tagging with {{IPA}} would be helpful. Site-wide spell check currently ignores tables, but this page is being flagged for incorrect use of superscripts because the MOS compliance checker allows IPA notation as an exception, but only when tagged. I've tagged the few problematic instances just to get this page off those reports, and left the remaining tagging for future work. Maybe before then we can figure out some way to tag entire rows or columns or tables or something to avoid all the markup clutter. -- Beland (talk) 19:26, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that! I think you're right about the usefulness of the IPA template. I don't know much about html, but the basic function of {{IPA}} is to add the "IPA" class, so there should probably be a way to add it in a neat fashion? I imagine we could use <col>...</col>, but I've just tried and I can't seem to make it work with a "span" attribute. Or maybe we could apply to the whole table a new class, whose effect will be identical to the "IPA" class except for the <tr>...</tr> elements? – Uanfala (talk) 20:42, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
