1983 result - Labour win rather than gain[edit]

I have changed the 1983 result from Labour gain from the Conservatives to Labour win. The 1983 boundaries were radically different and Urmston, the most Conservative part of the seat, had been removed to the new Davyhulme seat (which the incumbent MP Conservative Winston Churchill opted to fught) with some Manchester wards added to the revamped Stretford. The BBC/ITN notional results produced ahead of the 1983 election concluded that had the same boundaries been used in 1979, then Stretford would have been won by Labour in 1979 with a majority of 3,607.[1] Thus calling it a Labour gain is slightly misleading, so I think Labour win is the best option in this case and I have also clarified the explanatory text.
