Proposal to Redirect[edit]

Oppose. The tiny town occupies a pretty small portion of the island. There is arguably more scholarship about the island than about the town. There is usually little reason to conflate a settlement with an island (exceptions can be found, cf. Singapore, but this is does not look like one of them). The island is more thoroughly encompassed in Padre Island and Padre Island National Seashore and as a local to this area this "South" designation to the article or query is really more relevant to the city. 162.198.97.65 (talk) 15:25, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I do not have any personal experience, alas. My approach is based on simple facts:

There are tons of scientific publications dealing with the aspects of the "South" island, see, for example, this one [1]. Using these works, it is quite possible to write a very detailed (and quite good) encyclopedic article about the island. While at it, I am not so sure that a similar amount of quality research can be found for the town (the current town article certainly uses decidedly unencyclopedic sources, like "fishingbooker.com", etc.).
In general, it would be awkward to combine articles on a settlement and the surrounding natural features. Typically, encyclopedias have separate articles in such cases, so do we (cf. Corpus Christi, Texas and Corpus Christi Bay). Ditto for the national park.

My objections above do not extend, naturally, to merging this article, together with North Padre Island, into Padre Island. The N and S islands are very closely related, used to connected, and can be described together, the size of N and S articles is small. However, this article exists since 2012, so I presume that many eyes looked at it already and decided to keep it separate, and I do not see a reason to change it.
