The article is comprehensive, however, I will attempt to "simplify" it so the average reader can understand it. John (talk)

Competing theories[edit]

The prevaling theory at the time was whole language. The authors wanted to demonstrate the importance of phonemic decoding (sounding out words) to reading comprehension. John (talk)

Rewrote the opening section[edit]
