Safavid Empire[edit]

Considering its location on the History of Armenia template, this article should focus more on the Safavid occupation of Eastern Armenia. The parts about Aechamenid and Sassanid rule are already covered in the Orontid Armenia and Marzpanate Period articles respectively. -- Davo88 05:19, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Anonymous edits[edit]

I have made some badly-needed edits and may add more in the Aftermath section. Right now I'm fairly comfortable with it, but I think that Balash should have some mention in this article, considering how influential he was to Persian-Armenian relations at the time. In general I would endeavor any future edits to this page to try to avoid painting the conflict anachronistically--at its heart these conflicts were about political power, not religious differences, and as it turns out most of the Sassanid suspicions were correct: Armenian ties with Byzantium continued to be a source of conflict for the Sassanids and their shared religion was clearly a part of that bond. I don't seek to justify the persecution that Armenian Christians suffered, but rather place it in context, as religious tolerance varied greatly from king to king during the Sassanid times.
