Original name[edit]

I'm not sure how people will understand that the place was originally known as Masaryk Sq. My reading would probably be that that was its first name ever. (BTW, I'd drop the apostrophe; it might be efficient to call it Slovak National Uprising Square instead of the infrequent of; and if the BBC transcript has the Slovak National Uprising Square as quoted, it must be a mistake by one of their non-native translators.)

The succession of its names may have been: Ring (and perhaps Rínok), later perhaps also Hlavné(?) —— 1870s the name formalized in the Hungarian version (Hlavné námestie) Fő tér —— 1886 Hungarian history emphasized (Námestie kráľa Bela IV.) IV. Béla király tér —— 1919 Hlavné námestie —— later in the 1920s Masarykovo námestie —— 1939 Námestie Andreja Hlinku —— 1948 Námestie Národného povstania —— later in the 1950s Námestie Slovenského národného povstania.
