Date of death - incorrect[edit]

Battle of St Eloi[edit]

Although cited to Michael Duffy's firstworldwar.com site, I say, having read the account in his article on Edwin Alderson that site, that I question Duffy's unsourced statement the Canadians at St Eloi "were decimated by their own artillery" as it infers this was in the main a disastrous case of friendly fire. The degree to which friendly fire was considered responsible for the losses is not clear in accounts such as that of Nicolson in his history of the CEF in WWI, nor in the relevant section of Edwin Alderson's sketch by Desmond Morton in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography; failure to fire rather than friendly fire was the issue highlighted because their artillery were getting sometimes inaccurate information on what points were in whose hands, so failing to give backup fire at times when it was needed, giving the Germans unexpected tactical advantage.

I have therefore raised a citation need against that phrase, what is wanted is a source that is independent of Duffy's information. Cloptonson (talk) 20:36, 15 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
