The Reaper or Wheat Field with Reaper or Wheat Field with Reaper and Sun[edit]

@Ceoil: The thing is that these painting are known by many names. Every museum that exhibits them has the bad habit of giving them a novel name. While I understand the motivation to use the COMMONNAME, it is difficult to determine what the common name is until the article is written and an RM is held. The thing I like about Pickvance (1986) is that he appears to favor the earliest name of the paintings. Most of his sources are the primary source letters by Van Gogh.

Van Gogh gave these paintings names. Without clear evidence of a more common name in English, I think we should favor the translations of the original names for the paintings.

C&c, am in the mist of a complicated (I'm not that bright) edit elsewhere, so briefly...
  • the VvG gallery calls it "Wheat Field with Reaper", which is more evocative
  • It cant be appreciated at thumbnail or even in a 200px width gallery; the figure is just too lost in all the vastness...and thus

Great stuff. I don't edit mid week, but this is totally up my street, let me research in the next 6 six days. ps, a google books earlier today showed up a lot of "and Sun" hits. Ceoil, from the letters, it appears Van Gogh always called these pieces simply Reaper and did not give then distinct titles. Maybe we should call this article Reaper (Van Gogh). However, the individual pieces appear to have acquired individual titles through history. In many sources, they are Wheat Field with Reaper and Sun (F617), Wheat Fields with Reaper at Sunrise (F618), and Wheat Field Behind Saint-Paul Hospital with a Reaper (F619). I also think that The Reaper (after Millet) and Wheat Fields with Reaper as well as a few others are part of the same motif and should be in this article.--- C&C (Coffeeandcrumbs) 07:34, 16 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Reaper

Reaper is a series of three oil-on-canvas paintings by the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh of a man reaping a wheat field under a bright early-morning sun. This is the second painting in the series, which Van Gogh appears to have completed in a single day in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France, while taking breaks to write a letter on 4–5 September 1889. In a later part of the letter, he announced: "Phew – the reaper is finished, I think it will be one that you'll place in your home". Van Gogh initially preferred this version over the earlier study, describing it as "an image of death as the great Book of Nature speaks to us about it – but what I sought is the 'almost smiling'. It's all yellow except for a line of violet hills – a pale, blond yellow. I myself find that funny, that I saw it like that through the iron bars of a cell." The painting is now in the collection of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
