I don’t wish to knit-pick.....:

Under NGR 2-6-0T Durban and Pietermaritzburg

“The locomotives were landed at the Point in Durban on 1 February and 22 March 1876 respectively” Should read 1877 (see Ed Campbell’s book “The Birth and Development of the Natal Railways” under chapter 14 and also reported in the Natal Mercury on 8 February 1877: “A new locomotive, the first of the contractors’ engines for the NGR arrived by the Basotho (334 tons), and was successfully landed on Thursday (1st), under the superintendence of Mr Harcombe, the stevedore”. The Natal Mercury reported that on 22 March 1877 “another locomotive for the NGR has been landed. It is called Durban, sister engine to Maritzburg”.

Under specifications: Delivered 1876 should read 1877.

First run: 1876 would refer to the ‘trial date of first steaming’, but the locomotives would have been first been run in Natal in 1877.

Additional information received from John Middleton on 19 January, 2013: Diagrams and data of the Kitson locomotives held at the Stephenson Locomotive Society Library, gives the ‘trial date of steaming’ for Natal Contractor “Durban” (WN 2097) and Natal Contractor (WN 2098) as 31.8.76.
