A Ukrainian-born Russian [1][2][3][4][5][6] Imperial painter . . .[edit]

This edit by user:Ушкуйник creates a rather poor orthographic formulation, very unclear.

Let’s see what the cited sources say.

  1. Vospominaniia Starago Uchytelia,[1] a 1907 primary source written in the old orthography at a time when the Russian censors still didn’t allow Ukrainian publishing. I can’t find the part where it says Murashko was Ukrainian-born, Russian, or Imperial. Can someone please cite or quote the specific passage?
  2. [2] Mentions Murashko once in a section about Serov (with a bizarre French spelling): “In 1877 he studied at Nikolaï Murashko’s private drawing school in Kiev.”
  3. [3] Mentions Murashko twice “Repin and his friend Nikolai Murashko were present,” and “his fellow student, Nikolai Murashko.”
  4. [4] 183: “professional icon painters and pupils of the Kiev painter N. I. Murashko worked in the St. Cyril Church,” 184: “assisted by local painters from N. I. Murashko’s studio.” 187: “whom he invited from the drawing school of N. I. Murashko.”

  6. [6] 47: “visited by an old school friend from Academy days, Nikolay Murashko, then director of the Kiev Art School,” 78: “His artistic credo is fully expressed in a letter to N. I. Murashko written on November 30, 1883,” 139: “Repin and Murashko, then young students at the Academy, were present at the execution,” and 150: “Murashko, N. I. (1844–1909). Ukrainian Painter.”

If I missed anything in these, please let me know.

Source 6 says he was Ukrainian. None say “Ukrainian-born,” “Russian,” nor “Imperial.” I will update the intro, removing the sources that are irrelevant. And I’ll add some more I found:

  • The Getty Research Union List of Artist Names: “Murashko, Nikolay (Ukrainian painter and printmaker, 1844–1909) . . . Nationalities: Ukrainian (preffered), Russian.”[1]
  • Bolshaia rossiĭskaia entsyklopediia: “ukr. zhivopisets.”[2]
  • WikiArt Visual Art Encyclopedia: “Nationality: Ukrainian.”[3]

Nikolay Murashko → Mykola Murashko – Most commonly used name in English-language WP:reliable sources, per WP:COMMONNAME. The spelling also corresponds to the standard romanization of his name per WP:UKR and the ALA-LC system used in most academic and popular-academic sources.

  • Support per extensively researched and very strongly sourced nomination. The form used in Wikipedia should certainly be the transliteration into English of the Ukrainian form of Murashko's given name, rather than the Russian form of his given name. —Roman Spinner (talk • contribs) 05:12, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
