Citation needed: german example[edit]

Hi! Any source for the statement about german example/inspiration for the Japanese? Japan and German empires were enemies in WWI therefore it's immposible to cooperate on Minekaze class design. The only "destroyer" that Japanese should examine in the time of war was - AFAIK - Großtorpedoboot S-90. S-90 was scuttled in Qingdao. I don't know if (or how) it was examined by Japanese, but it was 20 years old (!) design at the end of the Great war. The first Minekaze unit (Sawakaze) was laid down 1918-01-07 and others followed short after that. Therefore there could be _no_ inspiration from captured german destroyers _after_ the war... It sound to me like another "Japanese technology is only worthless copy of Western design" story! Bye... --Sceadugenga (talk) 15:55, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In Whitley's Destroyers of World War II, p.188, it says: "They [the Minekazes] ... retained the generally Germanic appearance and layout of their forebears." On p.187: "Japan ... early user of torpedo boats ... built in home yards several of various yards, including ... Schichau ... premier types of the period." On this site: "This well deck layout followed typical German torpedo boat design practice.". And here: "When compared with previous destroyers, the Minekaze class forecastle was longer with a break forward of the bridge forming a well deck for the forward torpedoes. This well deck was inspired by German torpedo boats.
There's a saying about not reinventing the wheel. At the start of the 20th century the Japanese had some catching to do in ship design. Sensibly, they bought in ships from top foreign yards and copied the best features - the forward torpedo well deck being one of them (though Whitley isn't impressed). So, there seems to be a case for Germanic influence on Japanese design. One nation taking designs from friends and enemies is universal, that's how the USSR got the atom bomb and the US got rockets - I don't see how the Japanese could be criticised for this, nor is it racial stereotyping to say so.
Haven't checked, but the above comment by Sceadugenga might have got quicker responses if posted on a task force or project talk page. Just a thought. Folks at 137 (talk) 23:42, 23 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
