For supporters of King (James?)?[edit]

I thought "Jack" referred to a British king (probably James_II_of_England, not sure) rather than the Union Jack. The Jackeens were the people of Dublin (or what was The Pale), which was an area that supported of King James (or similar). Gronky (talk) 03:19, 22 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That makes no sense James had support from most everywhere outside parts of Ulster. 100.0.196.219 (talk) 00:32, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

First use of term[edit]

I have found an earlier use of jakeen than 1840. Reference: Frayer's Magazine Vol. 5 1832 p. 122 February issue. In the piece titled: "The Great and Celebrated Hogg Dinner"

“I cannot gratify you, gentlemen, in any thing musical,” continued Mr. Picken ; “ but, talk of Ireland and what can she shew like us, either in men or in brogue, with her spalpeens, and her jakeens, and her smithereens, and her dirty, smoky poteen, whilk would make a dog sick at this very moment.”
