Whatever be its etymology, the word Homa in present-day Hindu usage simply means 'fire-sacrifice'; it is a synonym for Yajya. A fire-sacrifice, called a Homa, forms part of most Indian ceremonies like weddings and Upanayanams. Each of these Homas have a distinct name (Laaja Homa, Chandi Homa, etc). The Soma sacrifice is only one of several such ancient (and now rarely performed) fire-sacrifices.
