Not every population who is called Gypsy in english is a Romani[edit]
Not all persons referred to as gypsy in English are in fact real Romani people. Unfortunately, this mistake is made bey english motherspeakers of paraphrasing all Gypsys yet as Romani, despite the fact that they are not Romani at all and never was. Although these groups share a lifestyle similar to that of European Romani, and their ancestors once came from India too, but at different times, they never spoke Romany but their own languages. No connection to European Romani.
Examples:
Domari's (Middle Eastern Gypsys)
Lomari's (Caucasus Mountains/Armenian Gypsys)
Lyuli's (Central Asian Gypsy)
Abdal's (Anatolian Turkmen Gypys)
Sinti's (a population native to Germany)
Ashkali's (a population once came from Persia to Balkans)
Balkan Egyptian's (a population once came from Egypt to Balkans)
Stop making all non-Romani Gypys to Romani, just because some Romani groups consider the word Gypsy to be slur and Gadjos are emulating it. there are also enough roma groups who keep the word gypsy for themselves.

@Equine-man, What I want to say: the problem is that all populations that are called Gypsy in English, (some of which I have listed, but there are more), are not European Romani. But yet a lot of non-Romani people think the word Gypsy is a slur, they just rewrite every populaiton who are called Gypsy in the word Romani. This does not benefit the real Romani, nor those who aren't or never were.
Therein lies the problem that no distinction is made at all. They read Gypys and immediately rewrite it in romani or roma etc...because they think Oh Gypsy is a slur.
