Colonial Forces in WW2[edit]

"With Belgium occupied, the contribution to the Allied cause by the Free Belgian Forces from the Belgian Congo was primarily an economic one."

Could someone clarify what exactly is meant by economic contribution here and give an example? 76.110.200.142 (talk) 23:55, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Force Publique or Public Force?[edit]

I notice that at some point last year the title of this article was changed from "Force Publique" to the literal English translation "Public Force". I wonder if this was a good idea. Throughout its long (and often unhappy) history this colonial force was almost inevitably referred to by its French language title. This was the case in English language books, media reporting and publications as well as Belgian. I know that it is English Wikipedia practice to normally translate foreign language terms and expressions but in this case the blandly unrecognisable title adopted will just make it harder for readers to find. Emile Janssens[edit]

Emile Janssens showed much interest in the press, mostly because its military profile had specifically oriented information. Thus, while he was a lieutenant shortly before the outbreak of hostilities of the Second World War he was sent to Congo in exploration mission in Bas-Congo, for organizing the defense of the maritime part of the colony that could reach the German warships. This mission led to the consolidation of the artillery Shinkakasa and quartering of a company in Bas-Congo, under the command of Lieutenant Henniquiau young, the future colonel of high reputation within the Police Force.

During the war, the role of Emile Janssens, [aide?] to the Governor-General Peter Ryckmans was remarkable. Janssens never failed to emphasize the potential danger posed by neighboring countries to the Belgian colony. He feared French Equatorial Africa, where the forces were under the orders of the Vichy government, which decided to collaborate with Adolf Hitler. In addition, Emile Janssens was also suspicious of European civilians and Italian Germanic origin.

With his eyes fixed on both enemy troops and expatriates suspects, Janssens suggested that intelligence structures be unified. He proposed that the antennas of the civilian intelligence service, located in the province since 1932, should depend on the Deuxième Bureau Bureau of the Force Publique. This suggestion was not taken up.
