Where is the epic of Köroğlu[edit]

One of the great revolts was the revolt of Köroğlu in 1581. His struggle is immortalised in the epic of Köroğlu That revolt should also be included in the major revolts subsection . Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 11:25, 21 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Konya[edit]

Both the Konya article and Battle for Konya articles claim Celali revolts into the 19th century. Student7 (talk) 20:20, 18 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Problems[edit]

This article is addressing several unrelated issues as if they were the same thing. The historical term "Celali Rebellions" most commonly refers to revolts in Anatolia from 1590-1610 and sometimes more generally from 1590-1660. The term "Celali" comes from the revolt of Celal in 1519, as mentioned in this article, but aside from that they had nothing to do with him and were not really related to Alevism either. So this article should either 1. Be rewritten and given a new name to address only the religiously motivated revolts in sixteenth century Anatolia, or 2. be rewritten to address only the actual Celali Rebellions from 1590 onward. As it stands, it can only misinform and confuse its readers.

Of the two, the second is the better option. Take this segment from the opening paragraph: "The major uprisings involved the sekbans (irregular troops of musketeers) and sipahis (cavalrymen maintained by land grants). The rebellions were not attempts to overthrow the Ottoman government but were reactions to a social and economic crisis stemming from a number of factors: a depreciation of the currency, heavy taxation, a decline in the devşirme system by admission of Muslims into the army, and an increase in the number and dominance of the janissaries (sultan's household troops) both in the capital Constantinople and in the provinces."

This more or less describes the motivations behind the Celali Rebellions of the period from 1590 onward, which the article hardly describes at all. Sekbans, inflation, and the breakdown of the devşirme system were not concerns in the early sixteenth century and thus it's wrong to leave the article the way it is now, inaccurately ascribing late sixteenth century issues to the early sixteenth century.
