Basil's death[edit]

I don't know just how likely it was his first wife poisoned him. I don't have Treadgold's book at hand, so I can't say whether T. has newer information than William Miller, or actually admits this was a rumor -- which is Miller's opinion. Miller judiciously writes: "It was whispered that the discarded Empress had murdered him privily, and her conduct lent some colour to the suspicion, for she was evidently prepared to profit byhis demise." (p. 46) Further, I don't know what the primary sources actually say to suggest this might be the case; Michael Panaretos simply states Basil died then Irene Paleiologina seized the throne. After almost 700 years, it is hard to determine when there is fact inside of rumor. -- llywrch (talk) 23:02, 5 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
