Characterizing Elkin as generally and simply an advocate for assimilation is not very nuanced. This is a quote from a 1969 article of his, "Elements of Australian Aboriginal Philosophy:
"I could not have had greater respect for any group than I had for these men. Buffeted by the white man's economic depression, they found a sure refuge in their own sanctuary of belief and symbolism. On the other hand, I have been deeply saddened by those 'sophisticated' Aborigines who since contact have been ready to despoil their sanctuaries and sell churinga to the white man for goods or cash. The bankruptcy of their spirit is possibly the worst evil wrought by contact with us."
