Virtual Assistant Referee (VAR) was founded in a friendly match between PSV Eindhoven and FC Eindhoven in the Netherlands on July 13, 2016. It is stated that "82 per cent of refereeing decisions were correct [before VAR]".[1] However, after the introduction of VAR "96 per cent of decisions go the right way. This shows how VAR has improved refereeing decisions to an almost perfect standard".[2]

First professional usage[edit]

On September 21, 2016, a match between Ajax and Willem II KNVB Cup final - which ended 5 to 0 win for Ajax - Was the very first professional usage of the Video Assistant Referee. [3] In this match there was a yellow card handed out to Heiko Westermann, an additional yellow card handed out to Freek Heerkens, and a red card handed out to Anouar Kali. [4]

VAR in English Football[edit]

On the 3rd of March in 2018 the International Football Association Board approved the use of VAR in premier league football. In November 2018 all premier league clubs unamiously voted to introduce VAR in the premier league for the 2019/20 season. [5] Upon agreement PGMOL started to undertake extensive tests during the 2018/19 season as well as observing VAR in the FA cup and the Caraboa cup ties.
