Svetlana Whitener (born January 27, 1961) is a professional coach and author known for her expertise in emotional intelligence (EI) and personal development. She is a Forbes Councils Member[1] and a recipient of the EMCC France European Quality Award (EQA).[2][3]

Early life[edit]

Whitener was born on January 27, 1961, in Yekaterinburg, Russia. Her father, a World War II veteran, was a business executive, and her mother was a director of operations in the private sector. Whitener grew up with two siblings. She completed her high school education in 1978 and earned an MBA from the Ural State University of Economics in 1983.[3]

Professional life[edit]

Career in business[edit]

Whitener began her career at the international trade conglomerate, URAL, where she initially led the organizational development department. By the age of 28, she had advanced to the position of vice-president of business development. During the period of perestroika in Russia, a time marked by significant economic and political reform, Whitener capitalized on the new business opportunities that arose from the loosening of centralized control over the economy. This period also coincided with changes in Eastern Europe following the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact, which reshaped economic relationships in the region.[3]

Entrepreneurship[edit]

In 1992, recognizing the changing economic landscape, Whitener founded a company called InLight. As president of InLight from 1992 to 2000, she initiated the import of fabrics from Eastern European countries and engaged a skilled team to design ready-to-wear clothing. The company collaborated with fifteen different manufacturers in Russia, contributing to the creation of numerous jobs in both the public and private sectors. Whitener's first visit to the United States in 1998, under the auspices of the Center for Citizen Initiatives's productivity enhancement program, marked a pivotal point in her business career.[3]

EI coaching[edit]

Whitener's interest in American business practices led her to the Coaches Training Institute in San Rafael, California, in 2001. Here, she undertook roles first in accounting and later as the head of human resources, a position she held until 2014. This period was significant for her professional development, as she gained insights into employee development, workplace positivity, employee engagement, and enhancing workplace productivity and challenges.[4]

In 2007, Whitener transitioned her focus entirely to emotional intelligence coaching, integrating her company InLight into InLight Coaching, and collaborating with the Neuro-Learning Institute. As InLight Coaching's chief coaching officer, Whitener emphasizes the importance of managing one's emotions and adapting to change, crucial skills for effective leadership in the modern workplace. She highlights the value of understanding and influencing the emotions of others, especially in the context of the evolving needs and expectations of the workforce, such as those of millennial employees who seek a deeper emotional connection to their work and employers.[5][6]

Whitener's coaching extends beyond emotional intelligence to encompass leadership development, people skills, human potential, strategic communication, building resilience, succession planning, and fostering healthy management and employee relationships. Her clientele is global and diverse, spanning various industries including high-tech, energy, manufacturing, education, biotech, finance, government, and marketing.[7]
