Pathmeda day is celebrated on 16th of May each year in the western Rajasthan's Jodhpur region.
there is an associated folklore with this day, and why is it celebrated across the region, its as following.
The Demon of Pathmeda
Deependra, a 28-year-old BAMS Ayurvedic doctor, was searching for purpose in his life. He had no lack of money, but his soul lacked peace. One night, Lord Shiva appeared in his dream and commanded him to go to Pathmeda village and serve the cows. Taking this divine signal seriously, Deependra decided to head to Pathmeda without any delay.
In the month of May, Deependra arrived at Pathmeda. Unaware of how brutal the heat in Rajasthan could be, he was greeted by scorching sunlight and blistering heat upon his arrival. Within a few hours, he realized that serving the cows was a laborious and challenging task.
Drenched in sweat under the blazing sun, Deependra did not give up. He toiled tirelessly, nurturing the entire ashram with his sweat. Despite the intense heat, he kept fanning the cows and taking care of them. His dedication and service spirit impressed everyone.
The next morning, after completing his work, Deependra bid farewell by leaping over the village wall. As he jumped, a stone imprinted with the shape of his feet emerged from the ground. The villagers were astonished by this miraculous event. From that day on, the spot was named 'DeepSa Ka Than.' The villagers believed that Deependra had conquered the demon of Pathmeda, symbolizing the scorching heat, with his determination and courage.
Even today, to protect themselves from the fierce summer heat of May and June, people offer buttermilk at 'DeepSa Ka Than' and pray. Deependra's story remains a source of inspiration in Pathmeda, demonstrating that with true purpose and determination, any challenge can be overcome.
