The Lie-Størmer Center (LSC) is a mathematics research center in Tromsø, established between UiT The Arctic University of Norway and University of Bergen. It is dedicated unite and advance the research frontiers in computational and pure mathematics by exploring fundamental mathematical structures and their increasing significance for modern computational problems. Furthermore, the center aims to be hub for mathematics to be at the service for all mathemticians in Norway and at the same time to reach out to society at large to promote mathematics. The center is named after the renowned mathematicians Sophus Lie and Carl Størmer, reflecting its commitment to advancing mathematical studies by bridging pure and computational mathematics. The center is a cooperate member of the European Mathematical Society^[1], a member of the European Research Centres on Mathematics Network (ERCOM)^[2] and collaborates with various national and international institutions. It organizes the yearly Lie-Størmer Colloquium, runs advanced Master classes and hosts workshops and conferences.

History[edit]

The first Lie-Størmer Colloquium was organized in 2022 and featured talks by Abel prize laureates Avi Wigderson, Hillel Furstenberg, László Lovász, amongst others.^[3]. Also in 2022, the center hosted the Baltic Way (mathematical contest) mathematics competition in Tromsø^[4]. The Lie-Størmer Center was formally inaugurated in January 2024 ^[5] - the 125th anniversary year of the death of Sophus Lie and the 150th anniversary of Carl Størmer - and its funding directors are Hans Munthe-Kaas and Cordian Riener.
