Jean Chmielewski is an American chemist, professor, and current interim dean at the Purdue University Department of Science and Chemistry.[1] She was the 2001 recipient of the Agnes Fay Morgan Research Award for her work related to the cellular delivery of therapeutic agents.[2] She continues her research today in the University of Purdue's Chmielewski Research Group.[3] There, her research focuses on drug discovery, nanobiotechnology, and the cellular delivery of therapeutic agents.[1][4]

Education[edit]

Chmielewski began her academic career by receiving her Bachelor of Science degree at St. Joseph University in 1983, subsequently receiving her Ph.D. in 1988 at Columbia University.[5] She completed her National Institute of Health (NIH) Postdoctoral Fellow in 1990 at Rockefeller University and the University of California- Berkeley.[5]

Career[edit]

Following completion of her National Institute of Health (NIH) Postdoctoral Fellow, she began her tenure as a professor at the University of Purdue.[5] She was later elected as the temporary Interim Dean of the University of Purdue beginning January 1, 2022, and continues her role today.[6]

Achievements and Awards[edit]

During her tenure as a Professor at the University of Purdue, Jean Chmielewski's research in the biomedical sciences earned recognition through many prestigious awards.

Her most notable achievements include 2011 the Edward Leete Award and 2003 Cope Scholar Award both awarded by the American Chemical Society for her teaching and research in Organic Chemistry. She also received the 2001 Agnes Fay Morgan Research Award for representing women's research achievement in chemistry[1][5] and was elected an AAAS Chemistry Fellow in 2008.[7]
