A wide number of scholarly, academic, or cultural fields of research or study are commonly prefaced with the Greek Pseudo (ψευδής, "False") to distinguish what are seen as fringe or untenable ideas and theories from the held by the mainstream of the field in question.
Some "pseudo"-fields may be used purely as derogatory terms, such as pseudoscience, while others have more open, constructive definitions, such as pseudoreligion. Some may also come to possess internally consistent principles as proponents exchange ideas while others are only used as an umbrella term for various unrelated ideas.
