Hector L. Ramos-Vega is a United States Magistrate Judge in the U.S District Court for the District of Puerto Rico. He was sworn in on October 20, 2023. Prior to his appointment to the bench, Judge Ramos-Vega worked at the Federal Public Defender’s Office for the District of Puerto Rico (July 2005 - October 2023). At the FPD he held the positions of Research and Writting Specialist (July 2005 - April 2006). Assistant Federal Public Defender (April 2006 - August 2010). Chief of Appeals (August 2010 - August 2014). First Assistant Federal Public Defender (August 2014 - March 2023) Interim Federal Public Defender (March 2023 - October 2023). Prior to joining the FPD, Juddge Ramos-Vega served as law clerk to the Hon. Justo Arenas, U.S Magistrate Judge. (September 2002 - July 2005). Judge Ramos-Vega graduated magna cum laude in May 2002 from the Cooley Law School in Lansing, Michigan. At Cooley, he was an editor of the Thomas M. Cooley Law Review. He obtained a B.A. magna cum laude in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Pre-Law from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus. During his carreer as an attorney, Judge Ramos-Vega served in the boards of directors for both the Puerto Rico Chapter of the Federal Bar Association and the Puerto Rico Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys. At the national level, Judge Ramos served in the editorial board of the Federal Lawyer, the FBA’s monthly publication. In 2016, Judge Ramos-Vega joined the faculty of the Inter American Law Scool as adjunct professor teaching criminal law and federal criminal procedure.
