Summary
DescriptionWilliam Pryor Letchworth Museum, Letchworth State Park, New York - 20220303.jpg |
English: The William Pryor Letchworth Museum at New York State's Letchworth State Park, as seen on a snowy March 2022 afternoon. Located just across from Glen Iris, the stately country home of the wealthy industrialist who gave his name to both the park and the museum (his formal gardens once occupied the site), this rustic stone structure was built in 1912 to a design by Warren, Pennsylvania-based architect Edward A. Phillips and originally housed Mr. Letchworth's private library and collection of Native American artifacts. Nowadays, its expanded purview also covers the life and times of Mr. Letchworth himself and the history of the park. Phillips' design for the building could be classified as a vernacular take on the Colonial Revival, with an exterior of rubble and broken stone arranged in random courses, an asphalt-shingled side-gable roof, and a handsome entrance that's by far the most architecturally interesting element: recessed behind a pair of Doric columns supporting an entablature with an elegant fanlight above, it's flanked by narrow sidelights in accordance with the style's precepts. |
