Description
English: The gravestone of the Gentleman Beggar This gravestone in Roxburgh Parish Churchyard is in memory of Andrew Gemmels, ‘Edie Ochiltree’ of Sir Walter Scott’s novel, The Antiquary. Gemmels died at the age of 106 after spending his early life as a soldier and then as a wandering beggar. He is depicted with his stick, bag and dog. The inscription on the reverse side of the stone reads:-

THE BODY OF THE GENTLEMAN BEGGAR

ANDREW GEMMELS Alias EDIE OCHILTREE WAS INTERRED HERE WHO DIED AT ROXBURGH NEWTOWN IN 1793 AGED 106 YEARS
