"The Consul General of France at Smyrna has just made it known that it is not possible for him to reply to all the telegrams from individuals asking for news of persons residing in Smyrna. But it did not happen to his knowledge that the fire caused a single victim, among the members of the French colony. The European population has been able to embark on warships or merchant ships and many people are already on their way to Europe. On the other hand, none of the many information received by the French government on the fire in Smyrna allows us to attribute responsibility for this disaster to the Turks. Finally, a dispatch from Rhodes says that none of the many refugees who arrived from Smyrna attributed the fire to the Turks. According to many witnesses, the crime would be the responsibility of the Greek military authorities who had organized an armed troop of incendiary soldiers. Moreover, some of these refugees, who from Eski-Sheir had fallen back on Smyrna, affirm that the town of Eski-Sheir, where not a Greek had been disturbed during the Turkish retreat, was; outside of any military necessity, methodically set on fire by the Greeks before being evacuated. According to a note from the Ministry of the Navy, there are approximately 250 hectares of fire, including the Armenian, Greek and French quarters, where a few rare houses were spared. Location of French establishments in Smyrna: College of the Saint-Joseph brothers, convent of Providence, Dames de Sion, completely burned. Cathedral, intact. The French hospital is destroyed, with the exception of the partially damaged new hospital. At Sainte-Polycarpe, the chapel is intact and recovery burnt. Mais il n'est pas arrivé il sa connaissance que l'incendie ait fait une seule victime, parmi les membres de la colonie française. La population européenne a pu s'embarquer sur des navires de guerre ou de commerce et beaucoup .de personnes sont déjà en route pour l'Europe. D'autre part, aucune des nombreuses informations parvenues au gouvernement français sur l'incendie de Smyrne ne permet, d'attribuer aux Turcs la responsabilité de ce sinistre. Enfin, une 'dépêche de Rhodes dit qu'aucun des nombreux réfugiés qui sont arrivés de Smyrne n'attribue l'incendie aux Turcs. D'après de nombreux témoins, le crime incomberait aux autorités militaires hellènes qui avaient organisé une troupe armée de soldats incendiaires. Du reste, certains de ces réfugiés, qui d'Eski-Cheir s'étaient repliés sur Smyrne, affirment que la ville d'Eski-Cheir, où pas un Grec n'avait été inquiété lors de la retraite turque, a été; en dehors de toute nécessité 'militaire, incendiée méthodiquement par les Grecs avant d'être évacuée. D'après une note du ministère de la marine, il y a environ 250 hectares d'incendie, comprenant les quartiers arménien, grec, français, où quelques rares maisons ont été épargnées.
