Summary

Description Hilltop/mound to right of entrance lane approaching Tower Farm, Swimbridge, Devon. Tower farm is believed to occupy the site of Ernsborough, an historic mansion house, of which only a tower was remaining in 1773 (according to Lysons, Daniel & Lysons, Samuel, Magna Britannia, Vol.6, Devonshire, London, 1822) hence the name of the present farm. The original structure may have occupied a burh/burg, meaning in Old English a "fortified place", or possibly beorg, a "mound, hill or burial mound". (Huxtable-Selly, Susan, Ernsborough: Notes on Origins, Cobbaton, Swimbridge, 2005, p.4)
