A címer álló, halfarkú tárcsapajzs a pajzstalpban zölddel és kékkel vágva. A pajzsfő bal oldalán hatágú aranycsillag lebeg, a cölöp helyén ugyancsak lebegve arany gabonakalász, s tőle jobbra és balra elhajló további egy-egy kalász látható. A kék mezőben ezüsthal úszik jobbra.
A kék mező a határ egykori vizenyős jellegére utal, ma az Ér-patak főfolyása halad itt a Csűrű-réti víztározóba. A hajdani halban való gazdagságot szimbolizálja az ezüsthal. A hal Krisztus jelképe is, utal a település katolikus és református lakosainak hitbuzgalmára, arra, hogy Geszteréd már 1332-ben egyházas település volt, papja, Pál tizedet fizetett a pápai adószedőknek.
A zöld a homokos vidék egy-egy zöldellő akácosára, nyárfaerdejére és a mezőgazdasági termelésre mutat. Az arany gabonakalászok jelzik, hogy a település lakosai elsősorban a földből éltek, gabonatermeléssel foglalkoztak, az aranyló termés szorgalmuk, munkájuk gyümölcse.
Az aranyos ragyogású hatágú csillag felhívja a figyelmet az egykor itt élők kemény küzdelmére (1514-ben Máté pap a keresztesei egy részét innen toborozta; 1848/49-ben 18 honvéd lépett a szabadságért küzdő seregbe; a holokausztnak 12 helyi zsidó család is áldozatul esett).
A pajzson enyhén jobbra forduló, vörös bélésű, aranyrostélyú ezüst tornasisak helyezkedik el, nyakában aranyszalagon aranymedállal. A sisakon smaragdokkal és gyöngyökkel ékesített ötágú (három levél között két gyöngy), nyitott arany leveleskorona van, amelyből honfoglalás kori aranypalmetta-dísz növekszik.
A sisak is a település hőseit és áldozatait állítja a figyelem középpontjába: az I. világháborúnak 39 hősi halottja indult innen a harcmezőre, a II. világháború idején pedig maga a község is két hétig (1944. okt. 20-nov. 3.) hadszíntér volt, az elesett katonák száma bizonytalan, de csupán polgári áldozatból kb. 60 vált a harcok áldozatává.
A foszlányok: jobbról zöld és ezüst, balról kék és arany.
(Alatta, a címerhez szorosan nem tartozva, kétszer megtört kétszárnyú aranyszalagon fekete a felirat: GESZTERÉD.)
A korona az önkormányzatiság megjelenítője. Geszteréd a XIV. században már templomos település volt. A koronából növekvő arany palmetta bizonysága annak, hogy már a honfoglaló magyarok is megültek a vidéken. A Geszteréd-Nyíri tanya lelőhelyen 1828-ban előkerült fejedelmi sír leletegyüttesében volt az a szablya, melynek aranymarkolatán szerepelt ez a díszítés.
